This vehicle being discounted by 17.5% at present which makes it affordable although the running costs will be greater than my 1.9. What consumption might I expect when towing a 1300 kilo caravan?Any thoughts please.

I bought a 1.8 4*4 Scout last summer.

I tow a Explore 452 caravan which is about the same weight.

Naturally, it started towing after about a week and just 200 miles on the clock.

The consumption started at about 22 mpg and at the end of season was doing about 24 mpg after about 2000 miles, so still not run in.

Over winter the normal consumption has been improving and as the vehicle has now done about 3500 miles I'm hoping to get about 25/26 mpg towing.

My Subaru does about 25 mpg towing the van, so I expect to end the season possibly around 28mpg.

We go to agility competitions, so it's usually a there, stay a day or two and back, up to a couple of hundred miles maximum, rather than long trips to the continent or similar - this will affect the consumption as well.

PS. Mind 1st gear, it pulls like mad and just loves caravans. You will love the car!

I've had a Scout TDi for two years now and have been towing a 1200kg van during that time. I get 29mpg in the summer weather and a little less in spring/autumn when it is a bit colder.

Overall it is a great car! However it is looking a bit expensive now and when I replace it I will probably still go for the 4x4 with the 1.6 CR or equivalent engine. This engine should be replacing the 1.9 PD engine quite soon.

The Scout is a great towcar and great in the snow but I've read on here that the 4x4s with a smaller capacity engine do a great job as well. So don't discount these unless you must have the Scout for its extra kerbweight or looks/equipment.

Thanks.

I get better mpg with the 2.0tdi Scout (both solo and towing) than I did with my 1.9tdi 4x4

Interesting stuff, because I tow a Conway Cruiser folding caravan (so less drag, and only 750kg) and even with four bikes and three boats, and a family of four going to Wales last year, I averages about 35mpg towing. I can only assume it is down to the drag factor (and slightly less weight) that gives me better fuel consumption than most here.
