I'm looking to buy a VAG-COM cable and software on ebay so I can alter just the simple things like the convenience settings on my '06 plate Fabia vRS.

Worried that the cheapo cables and software on ebay might damage my ECU, or is that a difficult thing to do if I only make convenience alterations?

Could someone tell me exactly what I need for this, please.

Unfortunately, there are no legal "cheapy" eBay wires for a CAN based car like yours. If you want your own tool, you need to get a genuine Ross-Tech interface. The least expensive is the MicroCAN interface which covers only CAN based vehicles based on the MKV platform. For better coverage, consider the HEX-USB+CAN interface which will cover nearly all VW/Audi/Seat/Skoda from 1995 through 2010.
