Aerial Removal

Featured Replies

Im having vinyl on my roof and it would make a nicer job if i could remove the aerial how easy is it?? Were can i get a shark fin aerial from the vw range??

Hi mate. I've done this job although not with the vinyl.

I bought my sharkfin from Mike B.

I believe it's meant for a mark 5 Golf. Changing the aerial itself wasn't too tricky,

ultimately its one big nut... Which I'd guess was about 20-22mm.

Used an adjustable spanner so I am not certain of the actual size.

The connection for the aerial cable coming from the front of the car was

not a direct fit. I had to remove the plug sleeve thingy from the VW part.

There's a littele tab you pull out and it just comes apart. I then plugged the wires together

as they now could without aforementioned plug sleeve thingy. It was pink or purple IIRC.

Then I taped the bejeezus out of it to hold it together. Bodgy but effective. :D

What really knackered me was taking the plastic trim at the very rear of the roof lining off.

I broke mine completely and had to order another from main agent. It was only about

£7 to replace so not a massively expensive balls up. :dull:

Golden rule of removing this part is to pull it STRAIGHT downwards toward the chassis.

I tried to pry mine off and broke all of the plastic housing the metal clips on it.

They all stayed in their holes... LOL I just couldn't see how else it came off until I broke it.

Once you've got the impossitrim off. Gently pull down the roof lining to reveal the fixture for the

aerial. Try to keep the creasing to a minimum but there will be a little so don't panic if

you do crease the roof lining a bit.

When I put mine back together the creases sorted themselves out after I parked it in

the sun and the handy water stored in my rear footwells combined with the suns heat did the rest

To the OP a MKV shark fin will cost you about £30-£35. Failing that have a quick scout about on ebay!
