Oil spec has apparently changed for the vRS?

Featured Replies

I was looking on the opie oils website using the "products for my car" link and apparently the correct oil to use in the Vrs is a 5w 30. I could have sworn it was 5w 40 and Motul did a VW specific 5w40.

as long as it's got the 501.1 or whatever it is spec, it'l be fine.

the viscosity's don't really matter too greatly, so long as it's the correct spec.

505.01

I emailed Opie about this earlier this week.

here is the reply

"Ian

505.01 can be 5w-30 or 5w-40, it is also replaced with the more up to date 507.00 which is a 5w-30

504. & 507.00 oil

from above...

VW 507 00 covers the following VW-specifications for diesel-engine cars:

VW 505 00

VW 505 01

VW 506 00

VW 506 01

My understanding of the oils is a 507.00 oil is not only used in engines that need long life oil (variable servicing) but also engines with Diesel filters (DPFs) and ones with more than 150 BHP (Ibiza Cupra TDI etc.). You can still use it as a 505.01 replacement as it exceeds the old spec.

My local Skoda dealer used a VW 507 00 oil (Shell Ultra VX 5W-30) when my Fabia vRS had a recent oil change and inspection service. That is in line with the advice Skoda Customer Services gave me about the suitability of a spec 507 00 oil for my car.

I too queried this, turns out if you want 505.01 used you have to sign a waiver.

I will stick to 5w40 505.01 spec as thats what i've always used, plus 507 spec gives no advantages over the old spec because with PD engines the "extended drain interval" scenario is still fixed (so in other words even tho 507 spec allows for extended drain intervals, PD engines still cannot take advantage of it). i checked with motul and morris lubricants and they confirmed it.

Can anyone tell me, as to which official body decided (Skoda (VW) spec engine oil) allows another oil to be used in it's place, please.

Thats a good question and and one i;'d like to know also.

I do know that the ACEA (european automobile manufacturer's association) governs all the performance regs of oils in Europe but I doubt it would have been them that changed the spec. Must have been VW?

5w 30 507 is more expensive than 5w 40 505.01. I'm sticking to 5w40 for the moment.
