Reasonably priced error code reader

Hi Everyone,

I need to retreive some error codes from my 2006 Skoda Fabia vRS. I have the ASR light coming on, but also I would like to diagnose errors in the future.

Could anyone recommend an error code reader that's reasonably priced (around £50-60), that would get me all the codes to save me going to the dealer?

Could anyone advise on these or others? I have a laptop, so would it be cheaper to get a lead and shareware version of vagcom software? I read some horror stories of poeple wrecking their cars with virus inflicted software - which put me off the laptop idea!
