running a tad lumpy, some times

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I'm a new member and new to the whole online forum thing and the lingo. I know, where have I been for the last x number of years?

I have a problem with my 2004 Mk1 vRS. Its running a bit lumpy, some times. My normal mechanic has been unable to find any error codes or replicate the problem, and main dealer was particularly unhelpful.

I think its ignition related, runs rough with lack of power through out rev range, and then all of a sudden its fine again. The level of roughness also seems to change too. The engine fault light randomly flashes, goes out on stays on irrespective of how its running.

If it was an older car (with out any advanced electronics), I would point my finger at the advance/retire or state of tune for particular fuel type, but the problem is not consistent, some times its rougher than others. Its as though the ECU is altering the ignition timing to compensate for something, (i.e. change in petrol, it doesn't seem to like me getting petrol from different garages), but then gets confused again.

The plus side is that when the ECU sorts it self out, and I have my foot down harder to compensate for the lack of power, it gives me a sharp reminder of why I bought it!

With the recent tax hike on petrol, I want to get it sorted soon as its drinking a lot of petrol.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
