Speedometer issue

Featured Replies

hi

Yesterday I went on a hike which included a portion of secondary (or tertiary?) road.

At one point I hit a boulder of dirt (rock?) with Felicia's underbelly.

What happens now is that my speedometer is faulty. It starts indicating only when I reach some 40 mph. It simply jumps from 0 to 40 then it goes well.

The mileage indicator is halt. So what is going on ?

The speedo is driven by a drive gear off the differential in the gearbox, movement is transmitted via a cable to the speedo clock. I would probably unscrew the speedo cable from the gearbox end and try turning it to see if it turns easily and if the speedo registers the movement (may need a quick firm spin and an assistant to watch the clock for you).

Agreed; you may need a power drill to spin the speedo drive enough to show.

If you've damaged anything it's probably either the cable or the speedo drive gear in the box from what you've said.

it'll spin enough by hand to be visible.

Before posting this topic, I took out speedometer drive gear for a visual inspection and since there wasn't any defect I put it back.

I will remove it again and see how it spins and revolves the speedo clock and odometer.

But what really bugs me is this: how in the world speedo clock shows eventually the correct speed  but odometer remains dead ??? They are driven by the same cable...

when i first got my cube, the speedo worked but the mileage trip didnt, fixed it by replacing the clocks, as i found my cable to be ok.

Then the gears inside the speedo that driver the odometer are broken.

FYI, a normal power drill will register about 70mph on a speedo, as already said, turning it by hand will register.

Maybe so on this car, but speedos don't have to register below 10mph. My low speed drill does 800rpm, so 800/7 gives about 143rpm. If you fancy achieving that with your fingers...

not that hard to be fair as its only 2.38 rotations per second. the shaft cant be more than 4mm in dia. so its easy to achive if you roll it along your finger using your thumb. remember, you only have to do it long enough to see the needle move, its not like you are trying to maintain that speed for any long period of time. :giggle:

Exactly.

the cable was not severed, but one of the square section ends was slightly rounded.

so it was slipping and engaging just when rotation was high enough to bring some friction.

thank you all. cheers.

did it fix the odometer as well?

did it fix the odometer as well?

yep.

the odometer probably needs a slightly higher torque, that's why only the speedo was working using whatever friction was left (see image)

ok then, maybe i can stop searching for a replacement odometer, worth checking anyway. cheers :)
