Is it my turbo

Featured Replies

New to the site, so bear with me. I have an octavia 1.9tdi, 06 plate with 79,000 miles on the clock, it's a taxi. Car is losing power when accelerating and there is also smoke coming from the exhaust. I've had someone look at it and they said its my turbo. Would I be better with a brand new turbo or a reconditioned one? I'm hoping to have the car for another year. Wat is the cost likely to be and does someone know of any good sites on the internet as to where i could purchase one? Any help much appreciated

I bought a reconditioned one from Audi some years ago (for an A4) and I have had no problem so far.

Someone on here posted a link to a company on ebay doing rebuilds of Garett and KKK turbos (im guessing yours is a KKK) for around £350 which is a steal.

I thought I read somewhere recently that Turbo Technics do a reconditioned turbo, with a few of their own modifications to make it longer lasting than the original.

This is correct, and they warranty them for 2 years.

I replaced my turbo last year, the car had the same symptoms as you describe (2.0tdi). I bought a reconditioned one for £365 and fitting was £170 (all inc vat). I purchased mine from a local supplier (turbo solutions) so the garage could take the turbo out and pop round to pick up the recon unit. I think the cheapest I could get a new turbo was £660. TBH, I couldnt justify the extra cost of the new one. If you have loads of cash, get it done by a dealer, the highest quote I got was about £1400!

Thanks for all your help. I'm being quoted about 360 plus VAT and then someone will fit it for £150.00. I think this is the cheapest I can get. Thanks again.

Reconditioned ones are fine, they are no worse than new ones.....it all depends on the price. I reckon buying a new one would push things to (nearly) 4 figures....
