Vibrations / juddering at motorway speeds

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I've recently bought a 55 plate Octavia Estate L&K 2.0ltr 140bhp diesel with 50k on the clock due to a growing family. Really pleased with the car and the specification overall, but have noticed on the motorway a vibration or slight juddering between 65mph and 70 mph before and after which it is much less noticeable if at all. Had the wheels balanced the other day, and they were slightly out, but this has not fixed the problem.

Any suggestions what this could be and what to get the garage to look at?

Many thanks

Tom

Hiya Tom, yes i've got this problem at the moment with my octy vrs. It happens on motorway at 70-80 mph.

I've not had my wheel balancing checked so going to sort that tomorrow.

The only things i can think of that may be causing your problem with vibration are;

1. Slightly buckled wheel.

2. Unseen tyre damage (structure of tyre) or under-inflated tyre.

3. Damaged/faulty wheel hub/wheel nuts.

4. Possibly a bent drive shaft, but i would have thought this would be noticeable at most speeds? (I've experienced this failure on a clio 172)

These are only possibilities, and i'm no expert, but these are just a few things you may not have thought of.

Good luck, and post how you get on, as the problem you have maybe the same fault/problem on mine!

I would say that this is the common problem of the rear camber values are incorrect, and your experiiencing the effects off "saw toothing" of the inner tread blocks.

Could also be the start of a wheel bearing going, thats how it started on my old Laguna, between 60-65 on the motorway which very gradually got worse until it was anything over 30, again, just a possibility.

I guarantee its the tyres.

I picked up a VRS a few weeks ago. Vibrateed at 65-70mph but not through the steering wheel like when you have an out of balance issue on the front wheels ( which is odd ).

I spoke to Savilles of Kidderminster who seem to be a very well respected dealer on here and as soon as I mentioned it to the Master Tech he immediately told me to change the rear tyres. He knew what I was going to say almost before I said it, from which I can draw two conclusions, its a fairly common 'problem' once the rear tyres wear/deform and that Savilles know their onions!

I changed them and job jobbed, its now perfect. Browsing various forums there does seem to be an issue with this vibration/rear camber settings/rear rumble as folk are changing rear wheel bearings left right and centre after wrongly diagnosing problems

Now that is interesting... my vibration is a little odd mind you as it seems to come and go and often gets worse the faster you go.

A garage once told me that you should be able to drive through a balance issue.

Its not a balance issue. the tyre has worn unevenly and is mishapen

But I could drive through mine and at 80-90 it was almost non existent, returned at around 130 cough cough

Its worth getting the alignment/tracking done too. Mine was considerably out, causing the uneven tyre wear. Happened past cars I've had too.

I had the same so I insisted that all 4 wheels where balanced at exactly 0 on the balancer, if just one of the rear ones is out by 5 you will notice it
