Engine differences both 1.6`s both MK1 Octys

Featured Replies

Just been looking at some octavias and want to ask what is the difference between a 1.6 SR engine and the 1.6 MPI engine I had a 1998 MK Octy and this had the 1.6 SR AEH Engine in but the ones i have looked at recently (also mk1`s) seem to have different engines in 1.6 MPI AEE engines, just wondered what the differnce is and which is the better engine out of the 2.

Cheers.

IIRC....AEE and AEH were pre-facelift - former had 74bhp, latter had 100bhp.

Post-facelift (which I think is the SR engine - well, I know my post-facelift was an SR) was AVU and had 102bhp.

In terms of which is best...well, most recent has the highest horsepower, but they're all pretty uninspiring IMHO - even for 1.6 engines. :D

Was the ahe 1.6 SR engine single point injection though and the AEE is multi point just wondering which would be better on fuel. I getting desperate now for a car the Mrs wants a ford fiesta or focus but the body work is naff on what we have been looking at, they still rust away. Even a 53 focus had rust bubbles all over the wheel arches and bottom of the doors.

Would rather stick with VAG/Skoda ;)

I've got a 1.6 SR in a mk4 golf, it's definitely multipoint injection.

I went through a spell recently of driving it quite a lot. I can get just over 40mpg with some effort. 70mph is around 3500rpm in 5th gear so it's no silent cruiser but it'll happily nip up to 85mph or so -- it just wont knock your socks off.

Servicing wise, it's not the best designed engine in the world for servicing but it's not the worst either.

I don't mind the 1.6 VAG engine, done plenty of miles in one so I have a soft spot! Nice simple/reliable engine.

Full Mk1 Octavia 1.6 engine range:

Pre-facelift:

AEE = 55kW (74bhp), 08/96 on, Euro 2, MPI 1AVM injection/ignition, 9.8:1 compression ratio, 1.598 litre.

AEH = 74kW (99bhp), 04/97 on, Euro 2, Simos 2 injection/ignition, 10.3:1 compression ratio, 1.595 litre.

AKL = 74kW (99bhp), 08/97 on, Euro 3D, Simos 2 injection/ignition, 10.3:1 compression ratio, 1.595 litre.

Post-facelift:

AVU = 75kW (101bhp), 10/00 to 04/02, Euro 4, Simos 3.3 injection/ignition, 10.5:1 compression ratio, 1.595 litre.

BFQ = 75kW (101bhp), 05/02 on, Euro 4, Simos 3.3 injection/ignition, 10.5:1 compression ratio, 1.595 litre.

So clearly the AEE is the dog of the bunch, and the AVU and BFQ engine codes are the ones to have. The old AEE has totally different bore and stroke dimensions to the later engines, which all share the same bore/stroke and capacities.

The engine I have experience with is the BFQ, and I'd say it's pretty good for a basic 1.6. I rag the nuts off the poor thing, and it takes it like a trooper!

the AEE motor is the same as a 1.6 felicia and we see a lot of them with oil pressure problems even well serviced ones...

go for the AEH or AVU SR engines. easy way to tell is lift the bonnet and if the exhaust is at the front of the engine its AEE

Hey guys,

We are looking for a secondary toddler-transporter, and it's really time to let the 1995 Polo go...

So, mk1 Octavias without any major rust deficiancies came to mind, and they can be sourced with climate & xenon - quite good here in wintery Norway!

But, from my time at the Skoda dealerships, I remember the 1.4 and 1.6 with 16V headers often got warped and needed exchange.

Due this low-maintenance idea, I would like to source myself a 1.6 8V.

ny ideas which engine codes to go for and not? Audi kept with the 8V quite a while in their A3 models, so can't be that bad for normal driving?

I mean, even Schrick offers a camshaft for it!

edit: the Polo has made 260 000km on the AEE 1.6 75hp just fine with normal/little maintenance too. Not saying all get that though, but it makes me believe a slightly bigger car (Octavia, I bet is +25% weight compared to Polo's 950kg to 1250kg or so and then also gets +25% power.) hopefully also benefits from a little more torque on 100hp engines, and works okay. Do they?

(I jump in the urquattro if in need of power driving...)
