Skoda Felicia 1,3 MPI cold starting problems

Featured Replies

Hi!

I have some problems starting my Felicia when its cold. When I turn the key it runs breifly, or not at all, and then dies after one or a few seconds. It runs roughly, like its on 3 cylinders or something like that. After a couple of tries (between 5 and 15....) it usually starts and then I keep it at around 2000 rpm to prevent it from stalling again.

After that the engine runs great. And if I try starting it again within about 4h or so its no problem. But if I leave it to long its really hard to start again.

I've had it at the shop and they changed the plugs, the lamda (it was faulty anyways) and they tried to change the coil also. Not sure what else they have done, but its still no improvement.

Do any of you guys have any idea?

try a new coolant temp sensor, or just unplug it and see if the problem goes away

Seconded; I suspect Tom and I both thought "temp sensor" before we even opened the thread!

Second that on the temp sender (fits in hose near thermostat, easy to change), had similar problems and this has cured it. Cheap fix. :smirk:

another thing you might want to check is the condition of the earth wire, if its not good, it will play havoc with sensors etc. On my pick-up ive just run another earth cable to bolster the OE one. I ran it from the battery earth terminal to a nut on the passenger side strut. has made a massive difference for naff all cost, as i had the cable kicking around. never under-estimate checking the easy/free stuff 1st!

i did exaclty the same on mine, i had to power up the electrics whilst i had the engine out so i needed to earth the chassis somehow

Thanks a lot for the ideas guys. I will get the car from the shop as soon as possible since they apparently dont know what they are doing. My girlfriend walked by the shop today and saw them driving the car around the house. And she asked them when they stopped if they had found the problem. And he didnt even know what the problem was. He said it worked fine, only a little hard to start... well doh!

Have a nice weekend!

I changed the temp sensor today and now the car starts without a problem. The sensor in the car had a blue ring instead of a yellow, I guess it was for some other engine.

Thanks for the help!
