Help with possible temp sensor failure

Featured Replies

Hi

The wife's felly's temp gauge never gets off the bottom. To test sensor Haynes says to "disconnect the sensor wiring plug, and earth the relevant wire to the cylinder head"! Which is the bloody relevant wire? Any help gratefully received.

what is it you are trying to test?? that the guage is working??

which engine is it too?? give us something to work with

Sorry. It's a 1.6 and I would like to test the sensor.

Thanks djaychela. To do this wouldn't I have to run engine to temp and then remove sensor? What would I plug the hole with? Excellent post btw.

NEVER MIND, WHAT A STUPID QUESTION.

No need to remove it, it was just removed to make an illustration (plus it was dark and late, couldn't be arsed to uncover the rally car). Do the measurement when cold, and again when hot. Don't remove ANYTHING from a hot cooling system, it can get messy (and there's no need here!)

also have a look at post number 3 in this thread linky

Thanks guys. I can't get any reading from the sensor at all! But I don't get a deflection when I connect pin d to the cylinder head either! I've just ordered a new sensor as it's only £5.50 with free p&p.

Thanks again

My 1.3 Felicia had a similar problem, I'd replaced the thermostat housing MK2 piece, this fixed my MPG, and today a new temperature sensor arrived, where before the temperature in the car was only reading 70, now it's reading 90 like it should.

Thanks guys. Bought a new sensor and just about to fit it but the wife just popped into town and now tells me that the gauge is now working!
