Hi Guys

I recently bought a skoda octavia 1.6 pertol. 02 model.

It was running smoothly for a while till suddenly i could hear some scratching sound near the left wheel/suspension.

The sound comes while starting off and till speed reaches 20-30, but stops at higher speeds.

Even when i turn the car around a roundabout at high speed or bends (so that one side suspension gets excessive force) this sound does not appear.

I tried to recollect if I had done some thing different and the only thing i remember is I was trying to pull out of a very sloping parking spot and had to brake a bit harshly.

If I get out of the car and gently push the bonet on the left side I can hear the scratching. But the suspension feels smooth and the scratching sound is not in syc with up/down movement of suspension.

Even when getting out of the car (passenger side) you can hear the squeaking sound.

The car goes smoothly over bumps and generally the squeaking shows no correlation to bumps on road.

Now comes the tricky part.

I was determined to get it checked with a mechanic, so next day started the car and what a surprise, the sound had vanished. I still take it to 2 mechanics.

One hoists it up ,says change both shock absorbers ( asking 220 pounds ) for it. The second mechanic, an old vetran took it for a ride, said cant say anything because no noise, but said that could be because of break pads not releasing.

I was happy that the sound had gone, till it has come back again a few days ago.

When the sound appears,it sounds like some tin sheet is being torn off,or scratched by a fork and is frightening.

The sound has stopped again, but I am not able to take the car away for long distances as I fear some thing might really get broken.

Any hints are welcome. Please help.

Will have a look at this today evening.

Just for me to understand, when the scratching stops , would it mean that the stone escapes?

Also cant understand why it scratches when i bounce the hood. Cos i thought the gaurd and disk will move with the wheel not with the car/suspension.
