If you need a spare wheel for 59 plate Octavia VRS

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

On re-reading the title of this post, perhaps I should have put for a "new" Octavia VRS rather than 59 plate, which is a bit blinkered :)

If you got, like me a car without a spare (mine was in country when I bought it) you may well have been searching around for a new one.

Thought I would share a few thing sI have found out.

You MUST get a 16" minimum size wheel to fit over the 312mm brakes on the VRS

Skoda do a kit for £130 that has the wheel, tyre and tools. Apparently the tyre at the moment is a 70-80 quid Continental.

The parts are available separatley.

Scrappies dont seem to have a clue what wheel will fit the Octavia. I got sold one that would def fit, bad luck me, it didnt.

It seems pretty much any recentish jack for VW, Audi and Skoda will fit the Octavia, mine cost me a fiver from the same scrappies. They come in black or silver and the fitting for the underside of the car is about a 10mm dimaeter "U" shape. Mine says for Golf/Passat on it.

I finally got bored messing around with scrappies and ordered the correct one after seeing one on EBay from Rainworth Skoda. However the one on EBay is not the 16" you want, its 6J and you require the 6.5J.

So anyway, after speaking to Jonathan in parts at Rainworth - 01623 623400 I have just recieved (next day too) delivery of a brand new spare, cost £51.99.

Part: 1K0601027A03C

16" x 6.5J ET50 5x112

I have a 205/55/16 tyre for it which gives it almost the same circumference as the 18" Neptunes with the 225/40/18.

Only bit I dont know is if there will be a 50mph restriction on this whee, anyone confirm or deny? Only real difference is the width.

Anyway, thought I'd share and hopefully save some of you the hassle and time wasting that I have spent.

The 6J will be fine too as it's what you run for winter wheels.

Cool, was just going on what I'd been told by the garage.

What diff does it make on the winter wheels? Are winter tyres generally narrower?

Thank you. Saves a lot of hunting and awondering.

As there will be a difference in the tyre's performance compared to the others on the car, I am sure that a 50 mph limit will be recommended.

As long as you are sensible, I don't personally think that it would bother me too much. However, if it was one of the skinny space savers, then that would be a completely different matter.

I've got the official dealer supplied space saver spare with mine which came with a 205/55/16 tyre.

It has a yellow sticker on it saying restricted to 50mph / 80kph so the answer is yes you should stick to 50 mph even though it is a big wheel for a space saver.

Well I don't have a yellow sticker on mine, in fact its got no stickers at all so I must be able to go faster ;)

The same tyres fit, it just gives a little more clearance for snow chains etc, which are not recommended on 6.5j 16" wheels

Hi Harlequin,

I saw your post on the VRS spare wheel size. Just to be absolutely sure: The wheel you bought was an alloy wheel or a steel one?

(I've been offered an alloy of exactly the size but with space tight I wonder if it would clear the calipers, and I reckon a steel one might give somewhat more clearance.)

Thanks and best regards,

Thomas.

anyone have costs?

Right ho - well the wheel is a 16" steel, cost £52 from Rainworth Skoda, the cheapest I found it at. As mentioned if you get a 16" wheel (5x112) is should fit over your callipers, however I decided just to bite the bullet on getting a cheapie off ebay and get one I know was exactly the right one for the car.

For reference if you need it I spoke to John Gadsby in parts on 01623 623400.

Hope this helps.

Steve

fanks
