Using Spotify instead of iTunes

Featured Replies

I am looking for advice on how to get the Columbus system in my new (Apr '10) Superb to recognise Spotify music files using the multimedia socket connected to my iPod touch. The system will play Spotify music files through the Aux-in socket but when I connect the iPod to the multimedia socket (so that I can view playlists / control playback via the touchscreen), I am told that there are "no audio files." The system does recognise iTunes music files, but most of my collection is Spotify. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What's the Spotify file extension?

Doesn't it use the .ogg format? Without a software upgrade to the Columbus I cant see how you'll get it to decode and play them.

I had no idea what type of format the Spotify files were, but having checked it would appear you are correct - .ogg. and this type of file doesn't seem to be recognised by the Columbus system. I assume a software upgrade is unlikely to be feasible?

Have you tried converting the Spotify files to mp3? - see here. :)

Thanks for the link - will give it a go and see if it works. Not sure it's as simple as dragging the songs from my Spotify playlist into the converter. Don't think it will let me do that.

I think you will have problems converting a play list to MP3 :)

Let us know how you get on.....

Not sure it's as simple as dragging the songs from my Spotify playlist into the converter.

I was assuming that you had downloaded the songs from Spotify in the same way as iTunes - i.e., paid for them. If so, the conversion needs doing on the PC where the original files are stored, from the original files.

Bear in mind that there may well be a loss in quality, so an experiment is called for first. I only use Spotify on-line, so I can't help there, sorry. :)

I have a premium Spotify account ie I pay £9.99 per month and can play music off line. It is these off line playlists that I am attempting to play through the Columbus system. I discovered today in the Columbus manual that through the multimedia socket I should be able to play MP3, WMA, AAC and OGG Vorbis file types. In other words it should recognise the Spotify songs. Called into the dealer today and he has given me a customer service phone number - hopefully they will be able to shed some light on the problem and I won't need to convert the file types.

I suppose it might be a situation similar to the restriction on WMA files - "providing these have not been protected by the DRM procedure copyright (Digital Rights Management)."

If the playlist structures the songs into sub-folders, you might need to activate the "Scan/Mix/Repeat including subfolder" option as well. That's all I can think of.

I am almost certain that this cannot be done. I think they will only play through the spotify app, either on your computer or iPhone etc. You don't actually own the files, so you can't get at them so to speak.

I was fainted by your description. In fact, your question is as simple as the title, isn't it? You are not using iTunes, but instead starting using Spotify, are you just looking for a way to import iTunes music into Spotify? My God, this is very simple. Google will tell you the detailed steps, you can find a lot of the same steps but different versions of the operating guide.

My God lol

Question is 9 years old, hopefully sorted by now.

the Columbus has probably thrown a hissy by now more likely  :D
