Changing Headunit in Felicia

Featured Replies

What keys do I need to take it out and what connectors. I want to put in a JVC hedunit and take out the original Felcicia tape deck. I remember someone getting for me an ISO conversion connector when I put my JVC stereo in my Astra years ago.

i put a JVC in mine and it went straight in. don't know if someone previous had converted it to ISO though.

How do I take out the original head unit? What pins do I need?

Will be a plug unplug job. Just remember to remove the face plate as the switched live is live all the time so may risk eating battery power. If you remove the centre console you can undo two screws under the stereo and it will come out with the plastic cage, you can then figure out how to remove it from that.

Yeah, just unscrew the screws underneath. I used 4 small allen keys to get the radio out.

It will still flatten the battery with the face removed.

I'm at present music-less (the stereo ended up in my wife's car) but it's nice to know I can now leave my car for a few days and not come back to a flat battery.

It's possible to rewire so the live is switched by the ignition.

Right I managed to take the old headunit out no problem.

My new problems are that I need an adapter to connect the aerial to the head unit. On a JVC its a long tube like connection and the connection on the Felicia won't fit. I managed to wire it up and stick a CD in to test it and the passenger speaker is crackling when you turn it up loud. I noticed this when we got the car. The old owner had shifted the balance to the drivers side. I hoped the new headunit would sort the problem. It did in my old Astra anyway.

So it looks like I'm going to need a new set of speakers. what size are they 15cm? I've never put speakers in a car before but I assume it should be straight forward. Speaker grills pop right off by the look of it. I'm not going to need an amp or anything for them am I? I was thinking of getting some basic Alpines or JVC speakers. They are around the £40 mark.

Oh I forgot about the antenna adapter. It's a popular one so it should be easily available. I think it's an ISO to DIN adapter.

So what about speakers? What size will I need?

in my 96' felicia they are 13cm. shouldn't be any need for an amp unless your going for more powerful speakers. most modern headunits have about a 45W speaker rating which is good enough.

i also cut a hole out of the back doors to fit speakers in there if your wanting a better sound. you can run the wiring from the rear speaker wires that will probably be on the JVC wiring loom. you can get it into the door using the rubber tube that goes into the door when you open it.

Rubber tube will only be on rear doors on models with central locking.

eek, sorry my bad!!

He won't be putting in rear speakers for now but it's nice to know it's easy enough to do.

So something like this should be fine then?

I had a look at the speakers today and from what I can see I won't need any sort of adapter/frame to fit the speakers it's just a case of wiring them up and screwing the new ones straight in. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

yeh they look fine, i like alpine, kenwood, or jbl speakers

i'm basing this on if its the same setup as a 96' model, they will fit straight in. if its original speakers you'll probably have to cut the original connector off and replace it with 2 spade connectors

How easy is it to rewire?

On most stereos there is provision to swap the live and switched live over using bullet connectors. Undo the bullet connector relating to the switched live (yellow at stereo end) and find the switched live either at the ignition switch, or probably easier in the fusebox. You can simply tap into this wire with a bit of wire using a scotchlok connector and crimping a bullet connector onto the other end.

Here's where to find the switched live http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/129844-no-switched-live-on-iso-block/page__view__findpost__p__1630294

I'm not too good with electronics, can you explain in simple terms? Thanks :giggle:

Actually, I've just fitted a switch, there was an old one which was used for an Electric Clutch still on the car, so all I do is switch it on and off now.

don't bother to change the front speakers, it's too much trouble for nothing because they're only 13 cm diameter.

put some 6x9 inch oval ones in the back did this on my felicia and i'm very happy with the sound :>

I am thinking of changing my tape deck in my 1.3 2000 Felicia to a CD. I got the old unit out fine but the connector on the backside of it is designed to slot into the connector in the car, no wiring loom.

I have an old CD unit which will fit in the unit aperture but the plug connector is on the opposite side of the unit to the inbuilt connections in the car. Fitting an adaptor loom will mean there is no space for it with the unit pushed into it correct place, it will have to stick out. Unless the Skoda unit is somehow longer than other units. I have fitted CDs to all sorts of cars, but for some reason this has confused me. :S

Reading this thread, it might be that different models are built differently, so any advice would be good. My unit is built into the main bottom dash, not in a seperate cowling.
