cam belt replacement at 17000 miles

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, my Fabia will be 4 year old on June 4th when it is going in to dealer for it's annual service and MOT, the service dept mentioned that the cam belt should be replaced at 5 years or 40000, my Skoda will have done about 17000 by then and he did say grudgingly that it was a bit early to replace it but it was up to me whether to do it or not.

What do you Fabia owners think, ??

Thanks

Really should be done at 4 years regardless of mileage. £350 for cambelt job, or £2000 for a rebuild if it breaks.

id get it done that way you havent got to worry for a good while

17k in 4 years?

Get it done you tight so and so.

its not just the mileage thats the problem with the belt, the material its made from perishes with age. It should be changed at 4 years if you have not done a lot of miles.

The problem is that people see low mileage cars as a good thing whereas in reality they're a big bill in waiting in many cases. Look at it this way, if you don't get it done then it won't have a full service history. They will state in the service book that it should have been done and you declined. They will do that to cover themselves just in case it all goes pear-shaped at 18,000 miles...

Do you do LOTS of short journeys? That REALLY hurts engines. Please get it done. You owe it to your car!
