Boost pipe (in front arch)

Featured Replies

I have been told by my mechanic that there is a boost pipe that can be replaced to improve performance on my vRS.

You can see it if you take the drivers side front wheel off. It is a metal section that is flat (so that your wheel doesn't rub on full lock)

He informs me that if you replace this with a bigger pipe it will give you more performance.

Does anyone know if this is possible, and has anyone done it already?

you can repalce it but wont give you any performance gain as the internal diameter is large but just flat so you can go lock on the front wheels.

so not worth the £££ to replace it

What he said - there's a lot of things you can do to increase performance but that isn't one of them :)

As they both said, it won't do anything!

The standard pipe is actually a very nice smooth stainless steel affair, which is worth alot more money than a fabricated aluminium aftermarket pipe.

As has been said, the standard pipe doesn't restrict the flow, as it maintains cross-sectional area by taking a gradual oblong shape. It's been properly designed by an engineer.

Companies like Forge take advantage of the fact that people like anything aluminium and shiny! I consider the Forge pipe to be a down-tune. It hasn't been designed. It's just been produced to make money off people who believe their sales guff.

It looks like they've removed it from their product range anyway. Since they refused to supply any technical justification or data. This is the last time I heard about this pipe: http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/130012-replacement-hi-flow-turbo-to-intercooler-pipe-golf-mk4-pd130/

What he said :)

If you put a wider pipe on there it would contact the wheel, it's been designed that shape so it doesn't.

Increasing the volume of the turbo to throttle pipework can increase turbo lag (e.g. if you fit a large intercooler) but to be honest the K03S turbos arent big enough for you to notice any turbo lag.

Point taken lads. Cheers for the help! I'll save my brass

Spend it on an ABD Racing tip, this will make the turbo spool up quicker and you will notice this mod, trust me been there, done that.

I think gerry is on about this

although you would need to clarify that would fit the VRS engine.

it replaces the standard one you can see going into the side of the turbo (highlighted in red) in the picture below of Leeboys engine, the ABD one is wider at the end than the standard one so allows better airflow from the air box into the turbo:

Thats the one, but just make sure its for a KO3s  as they also make one for the KO4 which will not fit.

Have a word with Sarah at Awesome as they have contact with ABD Racing products in the USA.

Really does make the turbo spool up quicker and, as Jamie says, it removes the restriction at the end of the OEM standard one.
