How do I remove Columbus head unit?

Featured Replies

Does anyone have a tip on how to access the back of the Columbus head unit.

Specifically - Do I need any special tool to be able to remove the plastic trim surrounding the unit?

I am about to install a Fiscon Bluetooth unit.

Hei!

A plastic spatula/lever (or a plast kile in Norwegian) of some sort ought to do the job just fine. Just lever off the plastic trim, and then you'll need a T20 torx bit or screwdriver to unscrew the four screws securing the Colombus unit to the dash..

Good luck with you handsfree system!

Great, thank you! emoticon-0100-smile.gif

I got a set of these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CAR-INTERIOR-DASH-DOOR-TRIM-PANEL-REMOVAL-PRY-TOOL-KIT_W0QQitemZ350267831775QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Hand_Tools_Equipment?hash=item518d96f5df#ht_1802wt_939

Great tools. They're designed supposedly out of a plastic slightly softer than dash plastic, so they deform rather than any trim !

Dead easy to remove - pop off the "outer" trim, then the trim of the headunit is separate. Pop this off and there are 4 screws securing.

I found that on my headunit the harness with the quadlock at the end was placed behind a vertical piece of plastic at the back/center of the dash - if you flip the cables out from behind this there is a lot more slack available.

Doesn't columbus come with Bluetooth ?

Bluetooth is an option in Norway. Thanks for good advice about tools emoticon-0148-yes.gif

The Fiscon unit is supposed to support more phone's and is firmware upgradeable to support future models.

Does anyone know if this is talking about the black shiny trim or something else? I've tried to get the black trim off but it's not budging and I don't want to damage it

I'm only trying to get mine out (to read the serial number for a dreaded firmware upgrade!). Mine is an 61 plate - MY10/MY11 so if someone can suggest what unit type it could be then I don't even have to get the unit out :-)

Someone has suggestsed that rev 3810 is OK for every type of unit but I'd put the latest on (rev 4028) if possible

Press and hold the setup button for about 30 seconds. You should then the what is referred to as the hidden menu. The s/n should be in there.

That just puts me in "Radio service mode" with no s/n info

Maybe the hidden menu isn't activated.

I don't like posting how to remove the head unit on here. Lets just say it is very easy........too easy.

Can you PM me with the trick because I can find an easy method that doesn't require VAGCOM or a firmware tweek?

I just went for it & installed firmware 4024 - seems to work a treat
