Buying Advise please

Featured Replies

Hi, this is my first post :)

I'm thinking about buying a vrs but i've noticed a few 1.8T's about also, i haven't driven either yet and was just wondering what the differencies are in terms of spec?? I know the vrs has an extra 40bhp and leather interior, just wondering what else there is??

Also i've seen a 1.8T 4x4 advertised and would like to know how reliable the 4x4 system is? Can it take the extra power if i start playing with the engine? Also what about suspension mods are the 4x4's catered for??

I've got a budget of just over 2000 so will be looking at cars with proberly 100000k+ but with full service history.

Thanks

Raf

VRS is lower, has slightly stiffer suspension, a different front bumper, bootlid spoiler, two tone interior, 180bhp (although same engine and turbo as the 1.8T and 1.8T 4x4, and if you remap one of these it will remap to around what the VRS engine remaps to).

The 4x4 uses a Haldex system and it's not full time 4x4 it's FWD most of the time but can put something like 30% of the power to the rear wheels if it needs to. You can buy an uprated Haldex controller which allows a better split of drive front-rear which is good if you're running bigger power.

The 4x4 has fully independent rear suspension rather than trailing arms like the VRS but you can get coilovers for it just like you can for the VRS.

It's slightly thirstier on petrol than the VRS but if you can live without the VRS interior etc. the 4x4 is a better base for modifying to big power.

I have the 4x4 20vt and im very happy with it.

But then i got mine for 1900 and it had only 39000 miles :-) and very clean.

I would think you could get 1 with a lower milage for them cost.

will post some pic of my if i can get my ass out to do it :giggle:

Ok got them but with my phone

I got mine from a car auction and payed 1900.

It had 39000 miles and is in very very good condition.

So just shows you what you can get.

Good luck and hope you find a nice 1 to.

Hi guys, i've been looking at a couple of vrs's first one was an 02 plate with 109k and a full service history. It was really tidy but had some mods done, like a front mounted intercooler, k&n and exhaust. The guy selling it has only had it for 4 months and said the previous owner had done the mods but didn't get it remapped, which i think is strange? Also when driving it id sounded like the dump valve was whooshing but the guy said the noise was coming from the airfilter, that normal? Only other thing was that it was making a loud ticking noise from the engine when ticking over, but seemed quite smooth. Car's up for 3k and looks in really good condition and is due for a service in the next couple of hundred miles, not sure if it would be a big one though it had it's cam belt changed at the last one.

What do you guys think?? Looked at the buying advice and it seems to check out

The mods may have been done ready for a planned remap. The ticking could be normal, the charcoal filter box on the left hand side of the engine bay does make a loud ticking noise and the fuel injectors also make a ticking noise. If the air filter has been replaced with a performance item then even the standard DV can be heard whooshing - I could hear mine quite clearly even when it had the standard Skoda panel filter in the air box.

If you are planning to get it remapped then check out what has been done to the exhaust - if it's just a backbox then consider adding the turbo-back section, then it would justify getting a custom remap rather than just a basic one.

I'm sure it was a cat back system, it's a toyo intercooler that\s fitted, are they any good?

What do you think about the price? Had a look at 03 that was a lot rougher body wise and had blue anti freeze in, so not serviced by skoda or a specialist. It was a finance repro so no history, he wanted 2.4k

Toyo(sport) are cheap ebay coolers but theres a few members on here have fitted them and are happy with them.

Price may be a little bit high considering the age and mileage but if it has a full Skoda service history (and pink G12 coolant) you at least have that peace of mind.
