possible water pump failure

Featured Replies

My son has just bought a 1.9 sdi. When servicing I noticed slight noise that I cant pin down.Aux belt tensioner is slightly out of line and seems to vibrate excessively but I am also worried that the noise may be emanating from the water pump. Can anyone help me with this issue?

I had a water pump failure. Was a breakdown of course with an overheated engine requiring a tow. The tensioners are known to fail too. If you are worried about it, you could get a cam belt service and water pump at the same time - about £400+.

when was cam belt last done, and was the pump done. some people just change the belt and not change the pump

Sort the aux belt tensioner out first. They make a hell of a racket when they fail. Wont be doing the alternator and aircon pump any good that's for sure.

Ok so we had another look today and we can clearly see the tensioner is not gripping the belt properley and the belt is vibrating quite alot hence the noise. When revved the tensioner grips the belt as it should, so this has probably been an ignored problem for a long time. Now does anyone know the proper name for the part? Or a part number, or somewhere online that has a diagram. Hopefully it is just this that was making the noise and not the cam belt or water pump.

Here is a picture to help

to check the water pump is ok, Take the header tank cap off when cold! and get somone to rev the engine, look into the header tank and if your getting a good stream of water pumped back into the header the pumps working

(Its my car with the problem)

Thanks for the reply, the pump does appear tyo be working ok. But does anyone know what the part is and where I could get one? Its that little bugger in the pic with the square on top and a spring behind it.

Cheers.

Part description Aux Belt Tensioner, about £70 from Skoda Dealer. You could try Euro car parts, or VW Spares for a pattern part.

Ok thanks, gave grasmere skoda in macclesfield a call, and got the tensioner and a belt for £61. Very fair deal as somewhere else wanted £60 for a used tensioner alone. Thanks for all the help guys. Now hopefully fitting will be straightforward enough.
