DMF's-why do they fail?

Featured Replies

Can anyone enlighten me why DMF.s fail? Is there any way to avoid failure? I see lots of posts about them and the problems. Has anyone had one replaced under warranty and at what mileage? We have two cars with these fitted and I am wondering when we will fall victim.

They fail, because IMHO they are a stupid idea.

There are other ways to do it and I seem to remember seeing a PDF from a clutch manufacturer that stated that one of the benefits of a DMF increased the value of a resale over a clutch kit, so it would help their margins.

Why dont "we" (the forum) help add deatils to this thread for people searching the subject. For example:

What is a DMF?

What cars are fitted with it (modles and years)?

Likely causes of failure?

Likely costs to put right?

Any tips to reduce chances of failure?

Just a thought

I have moved my answers to the above to a clean thread, which can be used as a point of reference. This thread is located here:

Interestingly I was speaking to a really enthusiastic mechanic at my Skoda Service Centre yesterday - this guy's family own four Skoda's between them and his Mk1 VRS is in excess of 300hp.......soon to be more.

I asked him about DMF and he reckons he has never replaced one in a CR. He's only replaced a couple on PD's. He says he comes into contact with many other mechanics at training days etc and very few DMF's have been replaced.

His comment was "it's been well hyped on Briskoda but its really not an issue"

Maybe he could tell me why skoda offer an SMF for the 1.9 and there have been DMF changes and it has gone over not only skoda, but also the rest of the VAG group PD cars.

All manufacturers seem to have had DMF problems to some extent. I'm new to Skoda so am unaware of any issues, but I know that Ford had major problems. The more powerful models and vans were worst. Toyota also were prone to failures, particularily the Rav models.

The DMF issue, to a certain extent, influenced my decision to buy an Automatic. Someone will probably now tell me that the DSG system has inherent problems!

Sorry, but I believe the DSGs have a DMF as well! It's a slightly different arrangement, but is still a dual mass thingy that can also play up.

Indeed the DSG also has a DMF as it's not an automatic as such, more a computer controlled manual with dual clutches.
