Tdi130 6sp Gearbox problem HELP!

Featured Replies

For the last few months, especially during the cold winter spell, and on a cold engine, i was getting a significant `crunch` into 2 gear. All other gears were fine, apart from the other night when i couldn`t engage 1st....that was on a warm engine. This did rectify itself later the next day. I can stop the crunch into 2nd if i change really slowly, and it kind of notches into place.

Now i`ve read the boxes aren`t that strong, and that it could be a syncro problem. I`ve purchased some proper grade synthetic castrol gear oil, would this help, or just mask the problem?

I went to a VAG `specialst`, Mckenzies in Lichfield, Staffs. First off they said clutch ( personally i dont think so ) then said maybe syncros. Prices were quoted at £700-£800 for a new clutch and flywheel ( flywheel needed they said ?? ), another £300-£400 ontop of that for a syncro repair. ...so around £1200 all in. Thats seems v pricey to me, what do you guys think?

Car has 80k, a good service history, and isn`t driven hard. Been a great car over the last 12 months, returning around 55mpg. I`m a bit dissapointed and disheartened tbh.

Thanks for any replies.
