Annoying rattle...

Featured Replies

I've had my Octy lowered about 6 months now. Obviously it's alot firmer, maybe too firm as you'll soon discover. So when I get time, I'm going to soften the dampers up a bit (I have a Koni coilover setup of some description) but for the time being, I'm being annoyed by a rattle from whitin the drivers door when driving over anything but freshly laid smooth tarmac. It's really getting to me and makes the car sound like it's built poorly, yet none of the other doors do it.

Before I go tearing the door apart, is there anything in perticular which is perhaps known for this? Any area of the door I should head to first?

Additionally, only sometimes, the rear bench seats seem to squeak when again, driving over a less than perfect surface. This is only sometimes and I cannot recreate the noise when I want to. It drives me crazy, but since it only happens when i'm driving, I can't spin my head round into the back to try and work it out!

So again, is there any perticular culprit for this?

Thanks in advance anyone who may be able to shed some light! If you're like me, rattles and squeaks in a car are a BIG no no! And before you ask, yes all the door pockets and cubby holes etc are empty :p

Well i also have a lowered firmer car and you do tend to get more ratlles/squeaks as a result

it could be the elec window mechanism or one of the cables that crosses it, to be honest it could be anything, when i fitted my audio bits i bought some vw anti rattle felt and lined any parts inside the door that touched to stop rub/rattle/squeaks.

Not really the answer you want but might help if you want to investigate, can get the felt from http://www.veedubmachine.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=610

Good luck mate, ive had a number of rattles and squeaks since i fitted firmer suspension..i have solved alot of them but i find i fix one and another one starts somewhere else! :dull:

Check that your back seats are pushed back firmly there is a rubber bung on each side under the seats that you can adjust to make the rear bench/seats sit firmer.

My drivers window is also making a rattle sound when the window is down slighty, but i have fixed the handbrake rattle, air vent, glovebox, rear shelf .......it never ends. :o

I just fixed a couple of issues with my drivers door actually. One being an annoying rattle, and the other being the auto up/down function not working on the drivers window.

Fixing the auto windows was easy. I removed the switch panel, and stripped down the switch unit until I got to the circuit board. Cleaned everything up with contact cleaner, and washed all the plastic parts. Then I just refreshed all the plastics with a bit of silicone spay rubbed in. Came out great, and works as good as new now.

The rattle turned out to be one of the three bolts that hold the inner door handle frame to the door frame. It had come totally loose, and was just sat there rattling about in the handle frame! Wish I looked into it sooner as it drove me mad on the drive across Europe! Once I discovered it I knew that it was that, but continued to remove the door card completely anyway, just to inspect everything else. Really easy job, and usefull to get familiar with the door and inspect it. The offending bolt is the one to the right. You can only really see the head of the centre bolt in this pic.

Here's the door frame:

So yeah, check out those three big bolts for the rattle cure. With the rear seats, just try winding out the rubber grommets a bit to isolate any seat rattles. You just twist them by hand and they move in or out to adjust.

Excellent info guys. I'll be trying this tomorrow. Many thanks!!

The window regulator screws often become loose, resulting in a rattle. Circled in a copy of the above picture:

Haha yeah the standard speakers aren't the best! Replaced mine with Infinity ones.

I guess that's one of the areas where Skoda managed to save money. Fine by me!
