Fabia fuel reading haywire!

Featured Replies

Bit of a strange one this, My fuel gauge never seems to run a smooth transition from full to empty. Usually somewhere along the way there is a massive drop making me think I am about to run out of diesel before it shortly returns to its previous position. Currently My fuel guage is just under 3/4 and my trip computer claims I have 355 miles left in the tank even though I have already done 450 on this tank! Anyone have any ideas what could cause this?

My fuel gauge never goes above half even though its full!!!!!!!

Dont think its jammed. Just to update I filled up with a tank and it went to full. Then it went down to about the same mark it got stuck on last time, eventually however it freed itself and showed the correct amount of fuel in the tank. Do you think it could be to do with debris in the tank?Is there some way this could cause it to stick? Im stabbing in the dark here.

Further update: My last tank I filled up with was BP ultimate. I had heard it had cleaning agents in it and I figured I might as well give it a try. This tank has given me virtually no problems with the fuel gauge running a nice linear path from full to empty. May be a coincidence but I am going to start using it every 4 tanks now.

The fuel guage in the Fabia is a total pain in the derriere to be honest - when I fill mine up the needle stays firmly at the 'full mark' for a good 100-150 miles or so then it starts to drop swiftly. At 250-300 odd miles it's showing half full and then it drops at an alarming rate over the next 100-150 miles when the warning light comes on at around the 400-450 mark.

Yeah mines is the same 150 miles doesnt move off full then it drops like a premiership footballer in a tackle

Mine is the same, the needle doesn't move that quickly for the first 1/4 to 1/3 of a tank and gets progressively quicker the nearer to empty you are - the last quarter disappears in a blink of an eye! A real pain - surely it cant' be rocket science in this day and age to make a fuel gauge that has a proper linear response throughout its range?

Glad I'm not the only one experiencing issues. My fuel gauge on my v-plate peugeot 106 was a lot more reliable than this....having said that the 106 could never put a smile on your face from bagfuls of torque so its a small compromise I guess :D

Just to add my two cents worth, I have had similar odd readings with my gauge, I drove from Sheffield to Sevenoaks (Kent) yesterday still registering a full tank at the end of my journey. But have used all of the same tank today on a round trip from Kent to Nuneaton and back to Kent, I am impressed that I have done 550ish (with mucking about once I got to my destination) miles in a tank while not sparing the horses etc, I am still a little mystified that I was able to do so many miles without a tangible effect on my fuel gauge. it seems like I get to a certain point and the fuel just is consumed at a faster rate. it takes a long time to reach three quarters full and then seems to be consumed significantly quicker from then to an empty tank.
