Need a 2.5 tdi head!

Recommended Posts

Hi there.

I am sourcing a cylinder head for my engine (drivers side), and are really struggling to get one anywhere. Glow plug snapped by garage.

Have found on German ebay reconditioned heads, some adverts refer to a whole range of engines that the head will fit, i.e. AFB AKN AKE AYM BAU BDH BFC BCZ BDG.

I believe mine is the AYM (155ps, 2002my). So far in this country last 3 days no success in finding one.

But as the BXX series engine is (I believe) common rail 163 ps, I struggle to believe the cylinder head would be exactly the same part.

Can anyone advise? Finding a specific AYM head is hard, but if I widen my search to AFB for example it becomes a lot simpler as this was a regularly used engine in the Audi A6, but not sure if it will fit!

A genuine Skoda head is £1800 with all the bits :'(

ouch.

Help people, please.

Is there no chance of getting the head to a machine shop to get the old plug removed and, if the hole is damaged, the thread heli-coiled ?

A good machine shop can do wonders for a reasonable price.

A good workshop could maybe spark erode the old broken one out?

I have taken the head away of from the cylinder head m/c shop and will be delivering it to a spark eroding specialist who reckons he can do it. We shall see. Apparently the v6 g.plugs are 6" long so spark eroding isn't that easy on them, but I know anything is possible with a bit of patience.

You're right they are long but the only interference between the plug and the head is the thread and the taper seal, a good m/c shop should be able to remove the plug and make good any damage that may have been done.

Good luck with getting this sorted it's about time you had a run of good luck for a change.

Hmm never heard of spark eroding before, just done a Google and looked at a few sites, looks like it may do the job.

Wonder if it could be used to remove a pinch bolt from the front suspension ?, sorry off topic I know

Yes it can. Spark eroding is frequently used to remove broken off "stud extractors" that have been snapped off in the stud being removed. They're too hard to drill, so spark erosion is the only viable way of removal. It will not be cheap but will be a lot less than a new cylinder head. Most decent machine shops have a spark erosion machine. Good luck.
