rear brake bias valve

Featured Replies

alright geezers...

does anybody know the process for properly setting up the alignment of the spring and lever on the rear brake bias valve on the rear axle beam??

i've been struggling with mine on my pickup ever since i fitted the lowering springs, is the lever arm supposed to be tensioned all the time? i've tried the moving the spring bolt into various different positions and it seems to make no difference at all, i seem to be able to still lock up the rear wheels in the wet

just to clarify, there's no fluid leaks, all the brake pipes were new about 6 months ago when i changed the engine, front and rear flexi pipes are all in good condition, front discs and pads new about 2000 miles ago, the servo holds it's vacuum and apears to be working ok... i'm at a loss to understand what's happening with it, sometimes it feels like there's nothing there unless you stamp on the pedal, then it pulls up very hard like it should do.. i have not checked the master cylinder over but i guess that the fact i can lock up both rear brakes rules that out..

it only does it some of the time, like when coming down a hill, or when only very light pressure is applied to the pedal progressing to full braking

i guess jimbo or darren can probably throw some light on this.. maybe the rear bias valve is broken completely??

That's certainly what my mate reported as happening with his Pug 309 GTi when the rear limitter valve failed; he got premature rear lockup in the wet.

there is usually a sticker showing how to adjust it mate under the bonnet, i will have a look tomorrow and see if i have one to get a pic..

it may be broken of course :S but a rarity as they usually just seize up in one position.. take it yours is free to move?

if not try some 22mm wheel cylinders (you may already have them depending if yours was built on a tuesday or a friday)

all the stickers are missing on mine. it does move but it appears to have no effect on the bias...

as a matter of interest do you know if it is the same as the hatchback model or is it unique to the pickup/van?

thanks for that jimbo, now i come to think of it, i think that sticker used to be on there somewhere...

ok, so how do i accurately measure the pressure in the brake hydraulic circuits then?

31 bars after the regulator unloaded, i guess i need a pressure gauge of some kind, i certainly haven't got one that's suitable for hydraulic fluid

yeah but i would need 2 of those becuase the standard master cylinder is dual circuit, diagnonally split :wonder:

i was thinking about the pressure sensitve restrictors that are used on the abs models too, they just screw into the ports on the master cylinder.. might be worth a look methinks

ahh you mean the non abs cars, i have an abs felly here and its piped straight from the m'cyl to the abs unit.. the older pre facelift felly's have the brake valve there
