Underbody care

Featured Replies

As with most Octys, the previous owners/garages have been jacking the car up and denting the jacking points inwards...thus causing the start of rust....and at some point the sill has been used as well :(

is there a way to sort this or any known treatment? will it be worth using underseal?

also whilst on the subject, i will be fitting coilovers this weekend (weather permitting). The set i bought was used...whats the best way to clean them up (general road grime and rust)? the rotating platforms on them seem to be seized from the dirt in between the grooves

Just been down to VW and ordered all the suspension nuts/bolts and new mounts/bearings ready to fit them :D cant wait.........

Got a few new things so I can change when i put the coilovers on:

Top mounts and bearing

New Pinch bolts and top nuts from VW

2 new stabiliser links

New Dogbone mount (as the one on mine is cracked) together with new bolts

Some undersealer (spray and brush on)

Have already fitted new wishbones with bushes and balljoints

and Superpro ARB bushes

and that should be that!

Shouldnt need underseal on the main chassis unless its bare metal by a jack or similar, its actually a really tough rubberised coating anyway.

the rubberised coating has come away or is non existant where it has been jacked :(

so am i best off just treating that area, or will i be ok doing as much as the car as possible

I think the chassis might be galvanised, if it doesnt appear to be rusty, some zinc primer (something like zinc182 or an etch primer) & then underseal when dry. If rusty then clear off with a drill/rust wheel, anti rust, zinc primer/etch as previous & underseal as before.
