Squealing Felicia

Featured Replies

My Felicia is squealing from the front wheels when driving along. It's a high-pitched intermittent (sometimes constant)

squeal but it stops altogether when braking- indeed it only happens when driving normally. Braking efficiency is fine,

the pads are only 1000 miles old and the discs are fine. I imagine something's sticking, or not fully releasing. Any help gratefully accepted.

There are a number of possible causes of this. So some questions:-

1) Does the noise get worse when turning one way and/or better when turning the other? If so, possibly a wheel bearing. Investigate by jacking up the car, rocking the wheel by holding it top and bottom,, then having a helper apply the brakes and repeat. If the free play in the wheel reduces markedly, it's probably a worn wheel bearing on that side.

2) Does the car have front wheel dust shields behind the discs? If so, it could be a small stone under one of them. Jack the car up, support with an axle stand, remove the wheel and look, flexing the dust shield. You may or may not find that the stone has gouged the disc if this has happened. If it has, it's time for new discs and another set of new pads I'm afraid.

3) Did you clean the calipers when replacing the pads? If not, then remove pads, clean and replace.

Thanks Ken, I just read your reply to my squealing problem. I'll try what you suggest and let you know how I get on. Cheers, Chris.
