Sounds to me as if the only way round this is to have a plate welded in, with a new captive nut on it

Not cheap though !

This may be a daft idea - It may be possible to get some kind of cavity wall fixing from DIY store, worth a look...

Sorry Buscksoctavia but you're right; it IS a daft idea and a potentially downright dangerous one at that! (but I like your thinking emoticon-0105-wink.gif )

The strut is under a lot of tension (try closing it up in your hands and you'll see what I mean) and a heath robinson lash-up fixing could cause you or other serious injury and or end up costing you a lot of money in bodywork damage if the fixing failed.

I think a plate welded on is probably the only answer unless there is a way of inserting a hankbush or using a rivet. You don't state the age of the car - if its still under warranty or not. If it is chuck it right back at the stealer, if not, just consider removing the strut if you can't get a proper, sound mechanical fixing sorted out.
