Brake pads and discs - are OEM or third party products ok?

Featured Replies

Hi, I have an Octavia II, 1.9tdi PD , DSG Estate Classic, new Feb'2007.

I bought this car used in Dec'09 from a non Skoda dealer,as part of the buying process the dealer "serviced" the car & fitted third party (not Skoda) brake pads and discs - not something I wanted, but it was done before I saw the car.

I am not happy with the way the car brakes in traffic and around town, it is fine above about 30mph, as it brakes very sharply under about 30mph and the brakes squeal.

Modern pads are metalised I know and sometimes squeals cannot be avoided.

But I am wondering if the dealer fitted cheap brake pads/discs or maybe even fitted the wrong size, as I understand the are 3 different sizes possible for this model - also maybe they did not refit/grease etc to Skoda spec?

I would like to fit new Skoda pads, without replacing the discs - is this a good idea?

Anyone know what the correct size pads/discs are for my model car?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Skoda don't make brake pads, they source them from a major brake supplier (usually TMDFriction, but they also use others, depending on model, braking system fitted and production date) and repackage them.

The dealer would not be able to fit the wrong profile of pad to you car - it simply would not fit into the carrier unless it was the correct shape.

For replacement pads try your local Eurocarparts or GSF factors, they will be able to select the correct pad profile based on your VIN/reg. number. Choose a premium brand such as Pagid, Textar, Mintex (all made by TMD) or ATE pads (another good brand).
