EGR CEL now mapped out

Featured Replies

Bit of an update to my previous thread about removing my EGR valve. In that thread I said I had spoken to a local tuning place who said they would map out the EGR CEL for me. When talking to them they talked through the procedure and it sounded right to me (modifying ECU map), so safe in the knowledge I could get the CEL mapped out I removed the EGR.

However when the time came to get the CEL mapped out the tuning place simply did an adaption using VAG-COM which I had read doesn't work. I took their word for it and gave it a try but 30 miles later the CEL was back on. I took it in to the garage a second time where I was informed sometimes the VAG-COM method won't work first time, but doing it again would definately stop the CEL. At this point I raised my concerns about not being able to map out the CEL with VAG-COM but I was assured it would work. Lo and behold 11 miles down the road the CEL was back on. I took it straight back to the garage and asked for a proper EGR removal which involved modifying the map. At this point I was loosing faith in the garages ability to perform this task, and no matter how many times they told me they could do it I had increasing suspicions they were just stringing me along.

After a week of phone calls to the garage trying to get the car booked in, and many promises of a call back when the map was ready (which never happened) I finally gave up with this tuning place and contacted Jabba. Kev from Jabba informed me it was a 5 minute job and since I'm close to MB Motorsport which is one of Jabbas agents I should take it there and between them the CEL could be mapped out easily. I took the car to MB Motorsport today and I've just came back from a 150 mile drive with no CEL

Thanks to Jabba and MB Motorsport for a wonderfully professional service, I can see why everyone on here recommends them so highly and I'm sure I will be making use of their services in the future, and the best bit is I'm safe in the knowledge they will do a top job.

Luckily I will never have to go back to the original tuning place, as I wouldn't trust them to change a wheel. At first contact they seemed like a good company, but after extensive contact I've came to the conclusion they are just good at talking the talk, without walking the walk. In hindsight I should have known better as there are many reports on the internet of this companies incompetency, but hindsight is a wonderful thing and I've learned my lesson. I'm just glad there are still good companies out there like Jabba and MB who you can trust to do a job.

Sorry for the essay but I'm just glad to finally get this put to bed.

It is good when you find someone who knows what they are talking about! Also "walking the walk" is key.

I have not had EGR C.E.L since my recent mapping either (although mine came from another source)

According to Jabba it's a simple enough process to map out the EGR, and I would expect any decent tuner to know how to do it. What puzzled me is that the original tuning company I used claim to do custom remaps and to be experts in engine mapping. I fail to see how this is possible without knowing how to remove the EGR from the map, and I'm starting to think they just apply generic remaps which they have bought from the internet. The worrying bit is I got my car remapped by them! I think I may have to save up and get a Jabba map in the future.

Name and shame? lolol

Btw... How much did the CEL light map cost?

I paid £20 to MB Motorsport. I was very impressed with the quality of work. Hooked the car up to an external power supply to ensure the battery didn't die during flashing and made sure the laptop was on charge so that didn't die while flashing. Dropped the car off in the morning and came back a couple of hours later to a CEL free car.

The company was PD Tuning in Boldon and after searching the forums I think this thread sums up what I have found also.

Apparently they were banned from here after some shocking revelations, I'm not sure what those revelations were though.

bad times sound like a set of cowboys think ill be getting a map done by awsome gti in the next m,onth or so but putting a PD150 turbo on first prob next week ;)

i've had my car mapped by awesome-gti and am thinking off getting rid of the egr! would the car have to have another map?

cheers

My car was already mapped and Jabba just edited the EGR out of my existing map and MB reflashed the ECU.

wow 20 squids is well cheap, I've been told off numerous places I need a custom map to get rid of my CEL! Surely its no different no matter what map you have though, mines a REVO stage 1, I was told off Revo a stage 2 map for £50 (upgrade) would get rid of the CEL but I'm sure this isn't the case!

Any map is fine for modification for the EGR, some however make things a little harder by applying a no-read function which means it's harder to get the file out through the diagnostic port.

Gaverick: I can take a look at the file for you if you'd like, the boost pressure limiter looked a little high but didn't really look through the file.

Thanks

That would be great. Two issues I've noticed with the map are it's a bit smokey and I get DMF shudder between 2000-2500 krpm if I floor it. Would it be possible to get a copy of the map emailed to me as I've been having a play with WinOLS recently and it would be interesting to have a look through the map myself to see if I can learn anything from it.

Sure, drop me your email address and i'll send you the .bin

Licensed copy of WinOLS i hope...
