When using hill descent control off road...

... what is all the mechanical clicking noises going on around the chassis?

I figured it was the ABS system braking the individual wheels but the speed it was taking me down the incline I cant see how the ABS function would need to be activated!?

Its damn clever technology I must say. Even SWMBO was impressed...

...top of a steep dirttrack hill; select neutral, press 'off road' button, feet off the pedals - ah, the look on SWMBO's face!!!

and even in neutral a dab on the accelerator makes you go faster????? huh?!

Very clever. i think the clicking is the ABS as I think that is what controls the speed by slowing up each wheel in turn - but I really don't know. I just enjoy having a brainy car!

It is the various valvers in the ABS unit opening and closing, thereby keeping the speed down to a set limit. The choice of which valves are open or closed is random.

As I suspected then - thanks guys.

tried mine tonight at about 30mph for the hell of it.... think I have found the basics of a good symphony using the various clicks and clunks and growls it gives out!!

The hill descent was a godsend during the last winter. There are two steep hills into and out of a river valley that we had to drive every day. The roads were gritted only once during the whole winter but the "hill descent" worked perfectly every time. All I had to do was touch the brakes at the top of the hill and the electronics took over.

Bear in mind that "hill descent" is only as good as the tyres it is controlling.

Can vouch for that one having done 180 in hill decent on the daft factory fit 'W' rated summer tyres emoticon-0104-surprised.gif
