Elegance 1.4l DSG- How Fast !

Featured Replies

I would like to know how fast the engine is running (rpm) in 7th gear at say 70mph.

One of the well know facts about this car, with the DSG box, is the very high top (7th) gear.

However, I have been unable to find any figures to support this.

So what I would like to know is the engine rpm, in 7th gear, when the car is doing 70mph.

This would be for the standard car running on 16" 205/55 tyres.

If anyone has any figs for the rpm/mph in other gears, or the gear ratios, this would also be interesting.

Thanks for any forthcoming information.

I have a manual 1.4 TSI - so no direct knowlege, but I believe that the DSG box gives 34 mph per 1000 rpm. This compares with the manual box - 30 mph per 1000 rpm.

Thanks Jeff

I just knew someone would have the info.

I must say that I am quite pleased to hear the result. Even 30mph/1000 is very relaxing for motorways

34 (!!!) is even better.

I will reply to this in due course when I get my car some time after 23rd June next.

And the really impressive thing is how easily it copes with such high gearing. Before I had a test drive I really couldn't believe that a 1.4 engine would pull so well from such low engine speeds and wondered whether motorway inclines would mean changing down. No bother whatsoever. Having spent the last 10 years being frustrated at the lack of torque from 16 valve petrol engines, whilst not liking the narrow power band from many diesels, then the TSI engine is a revelation. Beautifully smooth, yet pulls well from 1200 rpm onwards. It is so much more relaxing to drive than my previous Nissan 2.0 Primera - I used to have to use 2nd gear out of roundabouts to out accelerate 130 bhp diesels ...... Fuel consumption is about 38 on my 8 mile journey to work (with lots of hills). Easy to get 43 + on a slightly longer run - and this from an engine that has done less than 1000 miles. I suspect that the change up points indicated are too low though - I think that they require you to put your foot down harder, whereas holding on to lower gear a bit longer means a lighter foot on the accelerator. I will be experimenting further over the coming months - but I have always been able to better the official fuel consumption figures on every car I have ever owned and I don't hang about either!

Just had a 1.4 TSI Elegance DSG as a courtesy car whilst my vRS was in the dealer, and it made for an interesting comparison.

The engine was smooth, and the DSG gearbox was very good - very smooth, and very reactive, it would drop a number of gears very quickly. It actually felt pretty nippy for a 1.4, although the DSG certainly helped things by changing down so quickly. It was definitely less economical than my diesel vRS, with less performance - just showing what a good combination of performance and economy the diesel vRS gives.

The car was definitely quieter than my vRS, predominately less tyre noise. The ride, as expected was noticeably smoother, but with a corresponding reduction in body control.

Overall a nice car, but I personally would stick with my vRS :)

And I would rather have a vRS as well! But for the money the 1.4 TSI is very good - but there is no doubt that 200 bhp would be even better.

is how slow not the question,

only messing

gd luck with the car when it comes health to enjoy
