Fabia steering noise/drone when turning

Featured Replies

Hi All

I've got a Fabia 1.9TDi 2004, 90k, which has developed a sort of droning noise when driving either straight or to the right. It tends to disappear when steering to the left. I get the steering light on occasionally as well but it usually goes off if I restart the engine. Seems like there's load on here about these problems and I've booked the car into a garage but am concerned that if I don't give them a clue where to start they'll just replace the steering rack. The noise sounds like a droning sound and it stays all the time the car is moving. If I turn the engine off and let it roll the noise is still there. Just had MOT with no probs. Is the steering on this car electric or the normal oil type? Could it be the famous steering angle sensor? Could it be some sort of poor electric contact? Any help much appreciated.

Kinda sounds like it's fighting the position you want to drive in, which would make me suspect the angle sensor 1st, especially as it's the cheapest part to replace.

If the garage are any good they should do a diagnostics check with VAG COM... hopefully that'll point them in the right direction if not tell them exactly what's not working correctly,.. And if your really worried about them getting stuck in.... just ask them to call and confirm before replacing anything.

EDIT: just re-read your post and you say it does this with the engine off? I'm not sure but surely that rules out the electric / assisted side of the steering system?

Could always be a rubbing brake which loosens off when turning left? Or a wheel bearing on it's way out?
