Cold Start - Jerky and Slight Misfire

Featured Replies

All,

I'm having a few problems with my car in a morning and this is one that the 20vT boys can answer for me I hope.

As I'm aware, the 1.8T has a secondary air pump which is activated on a cold start for around one minute (I'm led to believe it has something to do with emissions). Anyways, since about 1 week ago the car is very lumpy below 2,000rpm until this pump goes off. In the term of lumpy I mean it's a bit jerky and feels like I don't know how to use my clutch but I'm not even touching the pedal. This morning, I started the car up but I had forgot my coat - I hopped out but I could hear it misfiring and it lasted for 5 seconds.

To be honest, I have only noticed it since I have put 99RON Tesco fuel in but I don't think that could be it as most boys on here use it and don't have an issue (unless I got a bad batch?).

My worry is coilpack or maybe the throttle body needs cleaning? Or maybe just a common issue?

Any help would be appreciated.

Luke

Give it a fault code scan  They do run lumpy when the secondary air pump is working and this can be made worse if you try to drive it during that warm-up phase.

Are you suggesting leave it until the warm up phase is over possibly?

Cheers

Yes; don't drive it until the secondary pump cuts out. Some are worse than others, and given that, I see no reason why one shouldn't suddenly develop the issue or have it clear.

I've found that mine definately kangaroos if I start it up from cold and try to drive away within a few seconds. Others on here (Fatty5000 IIRC) have never had that problem.

Well ......................

I did have the problem a few years back for a short while, then it vanished and has never bothered me since ?????

I just used to wait until the revs dropped and then go, no problem whatsoever then !!

These days I jump in and straight off no problem ??

Maybe I changed the plugs and that fixed it, I can't think of any thing else that would have done it to be honest.

Just wait for the minute, after all it's only a minute :p

I had the same problem, to the point where I would get a serious misfire and have to switch the car off and on again. Cleaned the throttle body out (which was filthy!) and never had the problem since. Felt like a different car. I can start it and drive off straight away.

Sounds like a dirty throttle body to me mate. Get it cleaned and change the gasket and it will probably be fine.
