New Female Driver Insurance

Featured Replies

I'm currently teaching SWMBO to drive (along with a couple of lessons per week with an instructor), as there is no way she's driving my Octi (when it arrives), I bought her a 1.2 Punto (R Reg), which I'm currently using..

I tried to get the punto insured under her name, but the cheapest I could find was in excess of £900 - in the immortal words of Omid Djalili.. "It's a hatchback not a limousine.. you're having a larf..."

I've tried the price comparison sites (tesco compare, Go Compare, etc) and the all come out at the same..

At present she only has a provisional license, so I get the feeling that this is what's hiking the price up for her - once she has passed will her premiums come down?

She's got no claims / convictions and is currently 27 with 0 no-claims..

As I registered the car in my name and took out the insurance with her as a named driver, she's not earning her own no claims.. I need to get this rectified ASAP..

Can anyone recommend me an insurance company who will not ask for 3 times what the vehicle is worth.

Any help would be appreciated on this one guys n gals.

i'm doing same thing at moment, i enquired and once she has a full licence it will go up, as on a provisional they will have an experienced driver beside them so lower risk, but £900 sounds very high, i was geting quotes for mine on a saxo 1.4 and they were around 600-700, for 18 year old on provisional, low risk postcode in a garage though

when she passes the premium will go up. My two daughters both have cars and we found the best way to reduce premiums was to have me as a named driver on thier policies. it made a big difference. One daughter has a 09 corsa vxr arctic editon and with me on her policy she pays £1400 wich is cheap to say she has only got 2 years no claims ans is 20 years old.

The car is currently on the driveway, in a good postcode area.. When my car turns up, We'll have to put hers on the road though - Due to it's age and type of vehicle, I might just go with TPFT for her car and Fully Comp on mine.

You say her premium will rise after she passes? I might have to put myself as a named driver on her's if it will reduce the premium. Would it make any difference if I said her had regular use of another vehicle? Does this actually bring the premiums down?

most companys will rise after passing, if the cars quite old, maybe worth trying fully comp with a very high excess, which is very similar to going tpft, as your not going to claim a high excess, but can often be cheaper.

i dont know about the use of other vehicle bit, i've never tried that bit before

Who's your insurance with? Some companies give no claims to named drivers when they take out a policy with them. When I was with Direct Line I added my sister to the policy as a named driver and she ended up with no claims on a Direct Line policy when she first got her own insurance...

She's since changed insurers and although she'd only had her own insurance for 2 years, she has 4 years no claims thanks to being a named driver on my policy for 2 years emoticon-0148-yes.gif

mines with co-operative, they give no claims to named drivers over 19, but can only be passed on to their own policy if they take out a policy with the co-operative

I ended up insuring SWMBO after she passed her test, in her 1.2 Corsa, with Diamond with me as a named driver for £600-ish.

It's steep but she gets 1 years NCB after 10 months and it's her own NCB

So you've only got 10 months insurance as well then? That's £720 for a year's cover then.

Just did a quote on Diamond for her - it is 646 (and a few pence) on TPFT..

Yep - they do have a bonus accelarator on a 10 month basis - might have to try some other women only insurances..

One thing I didn't like was when adding me as a named driver it asked the question "Male or Female?" - does it matter? Is that even legal? Surely there is something in the sex discrimination act against that?

with the bonus accelerator things you can only use those no claims with that insurer at renewal so you cant swap and change companys when renewal arives, i got caught out by that when i first passed my test, i've 5 years driving with no claims, yet only got 3 years no claims as the company i was with stopped the scheme and no other insurer would take on the no-claims earnt on the accelerator!

Male or Female is unfortunately is sexual discrimination, but unfortunately statistics show that new drivers who are female are more careful than young or new male drivers (boy racers/ showing off to mates etc is apparently a lad thing pushing our quotes up) .however a real life case study within a slice of my closest friends (10 lads 10 girls who i most associate with all under 22 years old) only 2 of the lads have had an accident, 1 of which was at fault the other was hit by an old woman not looking at a junction, however 8 of the girls have had accidents, 2 of them have had 2 accidents, and out of these 9 accidents 7 have been at fault by my friend! so this shows around 80% of my friends who have had fault accidents were girls, compared to only 20% of the accidents caused by blokes.

now the flip side 6 of the blokes have 3 points for speeding, 1 has 6 points for speeding and 1 has 9 points (6 speeding, 3 mobile phone use)and out of the girls only 1 of them has 3 points and that was for speeding, so i argue with the statistics based on that slice of my friends!!!!!
