Q? re Wheel bolt thread size

Featured Replies

Can anyone tell me what the thread size is on the wheel bolts on my Octy2 - I want to buy some long studs to screw into the hubs to make fitting my wheels and spacers easier.

If you use studs then you must use the correct grade high tensile steel i.e. grade 10.9 or greater ( 12.9) .Also you would need special nuts with the radiused profile to suit the seat area of your wheels .Also the studs would need to be prevented from screwing in too far. You would need to go to a specialist who caters for these items .

Studs are not for holding the wheels on just to screw a couple in while fitting/aligning the wheels then replace with normal bolts

Sounds like a damed good idea. So easy to damage the inside of your wheels on your brake discs when you're fitting them solo, especially with spacers.

They're M14 x 1.5 by the way.

Thanks Wega - now to find a cheap source, will post when I do

Wega - the problem with buying threaded studs is that the threads will chew up the wheels holes also standard M14 bar has a courser thread than the VAG 1.5mm. Did look at buying long fine thread M14 bolts, which have a 1.5mm pitch but again the thread is likely to damage the inside of the wheels bolt holes and let corrosion start.

So I went with the proper of the shelf items linked in post above

Oh I'm getting some of those.

Nice find.

Id not use the studding listed on ebay for my wheels, its soft as the brown and sticky stuff. Wheel bolts are a specific grade and will have been tensile tested for the application

Edit: should have read the thread

Another possible simple answer would to buy one new wheel bolt from a Skoda dealer, cut off the hexagonal end and just use that.

The resulting 'bolt' would be far too short even to reliably hold a wheel on its own and I run 20mm spacers so needed the specialist item I have posted a link to.

Ordered.

Can't tell you how pleased I am you found these.

I hate the stress of mounting nice wheels on your own, trying not to mark the inside of the rim on the brakes. Taking the wheels off to clean / grease coilovers / swap between summer and winter wheels is going to be so much easier.

Another, related product I highly recommend for avoiding marking your wheels is a Laser nylon shielded socket. I keep one of those in my boot on a torque wrench instead of the normal wheel wrench. B)

I bought them from Passion Automotive via this item on ebay. £12.98 delivered. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300429477634#ht_1421wt_1199

I've bought from Passion Automotive (via ebay and direct via their web store) before and they're brilliant - good prices and really fast delivery.

Now why didn't I think to try Ebay - still only wasted just over a quid :(
