According to the book, if there is a problem, you should get a beep followed by a 3 second higher pitched beep when you select reverse. Mine don't work and sometimes I get the 3 second beep and sometimes I don't.

I had the same problem. Had to have one of the sensors replaced under warranty. Some days it would beep as you explain. Some times it would beep as Goo Shag mentions. Somtimes nothing at all. Replaced one senor and all working fine now.

If you have VAGCOM you can use it to see how far the objects are from the sensors in Measuring blocks, the number should be like 255 when there is nothing infront of the sensor, and there should be 4 numbers, first one is outer left, second one is inner left and so on.
