1.4 mpi takes longer to start when warm

Featured Replies

When the car is cold it starts very well, infact almost instantaneously. However, when warm it needs to be turned over longer, but still always starts and runs fine (albeit with the characteristic lumpy idle well discussed elsewhere). With my previous car, the Favorit (based on the same engine), it was always the other way around, and when warm a momentary flick of the key then off was enough to get it going (I was amazed it started so easy for its age and mileage). I have recently renewed the temp sender and thermostat and it gets up to temp nicely (slightly below the middle mark) and stays there. I was wondering if this was an issue or indicative of any issues that need addressing or impending doom.

I have also noticed another interesting oddity. When there is a speed reading at idle (clutch down) the revs increase, which I assume is some sort of anti-stall measure in the ECU.

Hi,

I'm not being any help unfortunately, just posting to say that I appear to be having a similar problem with my 2002, 1.4 classic MPI, in that it sometimes decides to cut out and not start up again when it's quite warm.

Like you, i don't seem to have a problem when it's cold - starts perfectly first thing in the morning.

Have you managed to fix your problem yet, or find out anything more about what's causing it? I'd be interested to see if i can do anything with mine to try and stop this happening.

I have replaced the temp sender numerous times with no improvement. If you have not replaced this yet, it is worth trying as it is the usual cause of such problems.

Other than that I wonder if it could be that the headgasket is leaking slightly.

Thanks for the pointers - i 'll get my car down to someone asap to give it the once over.

I've got a feeling that my temp sensor is probably playing up again. It could be one of those things that i'm just going to have problems with every few years... Although if that's the solution to these problems, i should be thankful. Could be a lot worse!
