Steering Vibration Help

Featured Replies

I had my front wheels balanced and my alignment adjusted last week as i have been getting loads or steering wobble and vibration at speed.

Sadly its hasn't made it any better.

What else could it be?

Could worn track rod ends, ball joints and bushings cause this? I know they are a little tired!

Any of those, or even worn tyres. Sorry, but I'm not describing how to check wheel bearings and rod ends again!

also an out of shape tyre or a broken inner cv joint can cause it too

the most obvious thing to check is that you haven't lost the vibration damper off the right hand driveshaft

How tight should the vibration damper be? I noticed what I'm presuming is the damper was loose when i did my timing chain. (loose enough for me to move it around and side to side. Also are there any good guides for checking things like ball joints and bushings and I have been unsuccessful in finding them!

dammit i knew you would ask that so i'll have to look up the torque setting for it...

it's also worth replacing the rubber bush in that vibration damper too if it spins round by hand, tightening it up wont have much effect tbh

Had a proper look yesterday, all the suspension joints seem to be good, rubber on one bush looks fairly perished but seems tight, no movement. The vibration damper is really loose, i can wobble it around, there's prob about 2cm clearance between its inner cup and the driveshaft all the way around. Guessing it should be tight on the drive shaft?!

yes should be tight. there should be 2 rubber sleeves inside it to clamp it to the shaft

So that's my nice spanking new one! (decided to get the whole thing, only £11. My hayes mentions gluing the rubber sleeves in place? Anyone know if that's a must and what glue should i use?

cool i've never seen the glued on tho and i dont suppose there is many types of glue that would stick rubber to metal. just fit it as is mate

How sure are you? Really want to get this right as the vibration is driving me mad!

^^ dont take any notice of what the haynes book of lies is telling you, just whack it on there as it is, there is groove machined into the driveshaft that it fits into, you can't go wrong really
