Weight of the 18" Neptune rim

Featured Replies

Hello !

Does anybode know what is the weight of the 18" Neptune rim ?

Regards,

Christoffer

No, but I doubt it'd be a million miles away from ~28lbs.

That sounds quite heavy...do we have someone who knows ?

That's how much the pre-FL 18" Zeniths weighed. Really can't see the neptunes being significantly lighter. OEM wheels are heavy, because they need to be relatively cheap to produce whilst also strong.

Hmm, the funny thing is that i thought that i shouldent buy any cheaper aftermarket rims because they were heavy (9.5kg). But didn't skoda say they reduced car weight ?

Then it just might be an idea to buy some new rims anyway.

Yeah - by removing the spare wheel - which is cheating in my book.

Ahh, so that's the story. That is cheating.

What's your opinion...is it worth a change to "lighter" rims around 9 - 9.5kg in terms of performance / handling ?

The trouble is, unless you're prepared to pay a lot, you will sacrifice strength and may find it too easy to bend / crack them in pot holes. If you only drive on good roads, go for it. I think you should be able to feel an 8lb difference in acceleration and handling.

Seconded what Wega says - lightweight wheels that are also strong are expensive. I've used Compomotive in the past and tried to stay well clear of the nasty OEM copies available on ebay which are a recipe for buckling, cracking etc because they are made out of recycled Rolo wrappers.

The current trend towards large wheels / low profile tyres is ruining handling and ride quality and its amazing how much difference you can actually notice between wheel sizes. I've got 18" Zeniths but the car actually came with 17" ones. I swapped them for no cost but to be honest, the ride and handling on the 17's was superior and noticably so. Remember there is no difference in tyre width so mechanical grip was the same in this case but the lighter 17's meant the suspension simply worked better over choppy surfaces (ie the majority of roads in the uk!).

I'm as vain as the next guy and would love a set of 19 or even 20" monsters filling the arches but by God, I'd hate driving the thing unless they were nice light (expensive) wheels.

Incidentally, even some of the better known aftermarket manufacturers (no names mentioned but think pre FL Limited Edition) seem incapable of making wheels that are both light and srtong!

Thanks for your reply.

What aftermarket brands are recommended ? What im after is a lighter wheel then the stock 12kg Neptune. But still i want a wheel that has "reasonable" quality. Im looking abit on AEZ brand. What you think about that ?

I don't have first hand experience of them. The quality looks like it should be pretty good based on their quality process description and they're German and TUV approved.
