Can anyone help? Engine light on - Fabia vRS

Featured Replies

Hey all,

This evening I picked the mrs up from town in my Fabia vRS and parked up waiting for her. When I went to drive off out of the space the dash lit up the following:

  • Power Steering
  • Traction Control
  • ABS
  • Brake System

The brake system light kept flashing and pinging so I immediately parked up again and switched off the engine. Left it a few minutes checking under the bonnet for anything that might have come loose, started her up again with still the same lights on but with the added Engine Light.

Switched off again and left for a good 5 minutes after which I started up again with only the Engine Light left on. Drove home very slowly (only 5mins down the road) with nothing else lighting up on the way back.

I've had a good search through the forum and have checked the brake lights (thought it might be the brake switch) which are working fine. I've just been out again and started her up with the same Engine light staying on.

Just wondering if there's anyone on here with a VAGCOM scanner who lives in Plymouth or nearby who could help me check for fault codes in exchange for some beer tokens?

Alternatively does anyone else have any ideas? The car is an '04 plate and has covered 81K.

Thanks in advance

Luke

I live in Exmouth and happy to scan it for you tomorrow if you can get up here? I might be down Chudleigh way during the day though.

Thanks for the offer but I'm a little scared to drive it long distances, especially at higher speeds :S

I think I might have to wait until Monday and take it into my local specialist unless anyone else has any ideas?

Cheers

Check the battery terminals may be loose? loose connection could be causing a trip up

my dashboard lit up like a christmas tree too recently same lights ect (however restarting the car did turn them all off) got it scanned and it was down to the curtosy unit hope that helps

Thanks guys, I'll check the battery terminals and failing that get it scanned.

Anything else it could be?

I wouldn't be worried about driving it unless you're seeing actual physical symptoms (lack of power / juddering, etc)

Checked the battery terminal connections and those seem to be fine and had another detailed look around the engine bay but couldn't find anything.

When I locked the car I did notice that the indicators didn't flash but when I unlocked it they did - is that normal? I'm sure they used to flash when locking it?

Yeah? When I drove it back from town yesterday it did seem to be ok but I wasn't exactly driving it briskly. I'm tempted to take it out again for a quick once around the block and see if its ok - would quite like to go out on the mountain bike on a day like this!

Not sure how long you have had your car, but you will find the warning lights can just be "one of those things" and often little intermittent electrical gremlins can be enough to set off a few lights which then don't return.

Am in Exmouth and as my car is on 3 wheels with one wheel undergoing a DIY repaint refurb, I'm not going anywhere soon! :D

try disconecting the terminals waiting 2 mins then reconecting should reset the curtosy system ect. also about the indicators tey should flash try seeing if you can reset it all.

Thanks again for all the replies.

I took it down an independant garage today (luckily I caught them on a Sat!) and he plugged her up for me and said it was giving a ABS/ECU fault code.

He cleared the codes for me and said to test the ABS and come back if it through up the lights again. I tested and luckily it didn't so will get it looked at properly next time it happens again.

Had it since last September so not too long but I guess if these things happen then I'll just have to put up with it. Thanks again for your offer of the VAGCOM

I just hope if it comes back it's not going to cost me an arm and a leg to sort out

You with AA if so a 1/4 Mile away from home you could have called the AA they would have put it on diagnostics and told you the same + reset it for free

Dont pay a garage just for diagnostics unless you have no choice hope its sorted now..

P.S if you dont already have breakdown cover invest for it roadside & relay its only £69 - Better than breakng down and paying for the tow truck to tow you away £150 just off the motorway..

I was in the jap scene before not 1 single breakdown no AA membership either, with the VAG Cars its better to cover your back ;)

My AA membership lapsed recently so will be renewing that ASAP but if was still valid I would have done just that!

Thanks again all
