Using vinyl tile insulation inside doors, etc

Featured Replies

Well. I've given the thread a  because it seems the logical choice for those that can't afford dynamat! :D I spent a couple of hours on Sunday taking my passenger door apart... Worse thing was when I came to do my step 1 piccie, the camera came up "battery exhausted" Well, I'll have a charged one when I do the driver's side.

Once the card was off (still hanging on due to audio setup :o) I started off by taping on some 2" wide strips on insulation down where the door card edge meets the steel of the door when popped in. This went nice and smoothly (and yes you can see it when the door is open, but I don't care. :D) Once the three sides had been done (left right bottom), I started with a biggish sheet taping it on to the top, and making sure I cut out holes for the door handle wire and the window switch to stick through. I also obviously had to cut holes for the three handle screws to go through when it came back to door card refitting. I had to line it up too, so the popper holes were still visible, and also not to block up the three torx15 holes at the bottom (much trimming with stanley knife was done. ;)) Finally I had a door that looked like something off Space Odyssey 2001, with just a couple of wires sticking through and the woofer. Oh, and on the door card itself (grill bit) I taped a big square sheet and attached it over the grill, cutting out a round shape the same size as the speaker, hoping this would stop most of the vibrating. I also lathered a couple of layers of insulation around the MDF mounting of the speaker incase there were air gaps between the 2 sheets. (probably should have sealed properly with some adhesive type filler or similar. :D)

So, now the door card is back on, but due to me not firing up my nest of amps in the boot yet, I can't vouch for the sound proofing properties. Oh, and I need to remove the door card again, because something came amiss during the work, and the door handle doesn't work now on the inside (it pulls the cable but nothing happens at the door end. )

Also, tonight, my radio refused to turn on again when I went home. :grumpy: Hoping its just having a "phase" and a swift kick will bring it back again.

So weekend's work was good, a couple of things after has sort of put a dampener on it.

Oh, and this job is wonderful for anyone who is curious about the inner workings of their door. :D:thumbup:

Looks like I wasn't the only one playing over the weekend. :D Had a go at sound deadening the drivers door but think i went a little more extreme :D. Door card off. Window out  and silver panel off :D . 2 layers of Flashing tape on outer skin plus 1 layer of bodyline = rock solid outer door skin :D . Then 4 layers on the back of the silver panel thingy. Still got a couple of other things left to do like more the crossover to behind the glovebox as i've found it rattles to fook when fitted to the door. Also need to remove one of the 18mm speaker supports and use something like 12mm as the speaker sits out too far.

Hope swmbo doesn't mind me working on the car tonight :D

 I'm planning at least one day's mega work on my car between Xmas & New Year. :D

Jason, what thinkness of wood did you use for the speakers? Do they hit the door panel?

Also seemed to have lost the pics of my sawing of plastic from behind the HU :thumbdwn:

Joel_Vrs did my install and I think he used one bit of 18mm, and another a bit smaller. But yeah, there was fouling between the woofer and the door card, hence the nasty vibrating resonance I got when cranking the comps up. :thumbdwn: Hoping the insulation puts paid to that. :D

Jason, your modding threads are bordering on entering SPT territory.

SPT? Sounds like something I'm too young to understand. ;)

Me too.

I'm really confused now

SPT = ****pipe technology. There's plenty of mention of it on SEATCupra.net. In a nutshell it is the use of plastic drain or waste pipe instead of bespoke materials for induction and engine bay cooling uses.

I am confused no more.

So vinyl tile insulation is SPT is it? I guess it is very much a "mis-use" of a material designed for a totally different purpose, so in that respect I acknowledge my SPT uses. (its a lot cheaper too. ;))

SPT is the same as PTT then. :D
