1.4 MPI sluggish after timing chain change?

Featured Replies

Hi there,

Hopefully someone may be able to shed some light for me....

Got a 1.4 MPI Fabia, 45000 miles, year 2000. timing chain was loud and rattly, bought the chain kit with pulleys from main dealer, had it fitted by local garage, now the car is proper sluggish, struggles to get up hills, have to drop it a gear to climb hills, have to give it loads of revs to get off our slightly inclined driveway.

Is it possible that the timing wheel is on one tooth out??? Challenged mechanic and he told me "it was installed as per the one that came off and the car must have been like that before" It wasnt, !!!

The engine note has changed as well, kind of sounds like it is labouring, ie when you accelerate hard, it sounds like it is "sucking" just to try to and gain speed.

Any ideas please????

We have just moved to Norfolk and have no idea where to take it to get it fixed.

Thanks in advance for any help...

Lisa.

And I thought I was being silly to feel that way . . . . .

I had the same feeling after I change ours just last Saturday.

I changed the water pump and had a new auxillary belt put in as well.

It was really struggling up a slope . . . . .

Anyone has an idea ?????

if this only occurred after the chain change then its 99% certain timing is slightly out...

Oh and Skodasg sorry I didn't think of this earlier, apparently it has come up in the past that on some new timing chains the timing marks are off.

Thanks anewman, no apologies needed and I hope I'll get "anewcar" after sorting this out.

Skoda is not very popular, no hold on, read not popular at all here hence

there's no independent workshops/techs very familiar with the workings

of them. The local dealers are hopeless too I might add.

Its a new dealership and they are selling the newer models.

Had mine done at a Saab indie who I use for my 95 2.3Troll.

Is there any guide I can find here to make sure that its done correctly

when its taken apart again . . . .

I can't do the job meself so I have to depend on the Saab tech to do it.

Couldn't get the parts locally hence had a load of service / replacement stuff

from Jorily as well ( shipped international )

I saw on the other thread that it has to do with the marking 1 tooth off but how should it be aligned ?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.
