2003 1.8T Auto Rubbing / Rumbling Noise

Featured Replies

Hi, I am sure I have seen something regarding this on The Forum before but cannot locate it, so if anyone can advise Iwould be grateful.

I purchased the car from a Main Dealer in January of this year, and have been experiencing the noise for at least the last three months or so.

The noise is most obvious between 1500 to 2000 rpm. The immediate reaction is to think that it is tyre noise, such as when the car goes over a join in the tarmac.

However the noise is present even when driving along a new stretch of unbroken tarmac, as if a tyre is damaged in some way, but they are all fine.

I did get the Skoda mechanic to check out the noise a few weeks ago and he said something like "a plate underneath the car (gearbox perhaps?)was running dry and the two surfaces were rubbing against each other". He said that he had lubricated this and that the problem seemed to have been cured.

The noise however still remains and sounds just like something is out of true and rubbing against another surface as it rotates. It also increases in speed along with the speed of the car.

Has anyone out there experienced a similar problem or have any idea of what may be the cause / cure?

Thanks Guys / Girls

I had a similar prob with an auto i once owned.Turned out the box was knackered. You could put a auto box treatment in it to see if it helps?

Thanks for your response Wagon Wheels, even if it is not too encouraging!

Let's hope it is not as serious as that!

What sort of mileage has the car done? If it's over 50_000 miles, it might be worth changing the transmission fluid (source ZF Transmissions).

Hi Ken,

Yes it has done over the 50,000 miles - just this week, 50,200 to be exact!

So a change of transmission fluid may solve the problem, I will contact my local dealer (where I purchased the vehicle),

and arrange for this, but I will first give him the opportunity to listen to the noise once more and see what his diagnosis might be.

Thanks for the advice Ken, I hopefully in due course will be able to post, that the problem has now been solved!

Hi Have you found out what this is as I am getting a very similar sound on my 2001 manual? at first I thought a wheel was hitting the inside of an arch or something but it isnt always when the car s going over a bump.

Thanks,

Drew.

Hi Drew,

I will be unable to get to see my local dealer/mechanic until next week, due to work commitments.

As soon as I am able to have them check it out and get the feedback, I will post the outcome.
