Brake and ABS warning Lights permanently on after brake drum change

Featured Replies

Hi,

I hope this topic hasn't already been covered, and I've done my best to find something on this. My apologies if this is all old hat. So...

I have a Felicia 1.6GLXi and in February one of the rear wheel bearings failed spectacularly and was replaced. After only a few thousand miles it's failed again, and the problem seemed to be that the inner race that is supposed to be press fitted into the drum was loose. I suspect this was due to damage from the original failure. Having being asked to take the car to the garage for me, my dad 'helpfully' replaced the brake drum and bearing himself. All seemed well until the first time I applied the brakes, at which point the car stopped normally but the brake warning light and ABS warning light came on, and have remained on ever since.

I don't expect this is relevant, but I'll include it just in case. The old brake drum seemed to have teeth, like a cog, cast into it on the inside just next to where the baring is. The new brake drum does not have these teeth, but is otherwise identical. I couldn't work out what they were for.

Thanks in advance for any help, is this something I can fix, or does it need to be taken to the garage?

You have replaced the drum with the incorrect one. The one with the little "cogs" is for ABS and without is without ABS. The cogs are what the sensor fitted to the wheel use to detect rotation on the wheel.

The ABS controller is not able to get a signal from the rear brake as the sensor can't detect any movement on the wheel.

The drum needs replacing again with the correct one designed for a car fitted with ABS.

Thankyou both for your help on this. I've just been on the phone to a skoda dealer who says the ABS rotor is separate and is push fitted into the drum. It looked like a part of the casting on the old one to me. Does this sound right to you?

as above.. yes it does come off but be very gentle with it as they are easy to damage, they are a tight fit over the bearing boss so make sure everything is nice and clean before trying to refit
