Jailbreaking iphone/ itouch.

Featured Replies

Just thought i'd start a topic about this subject.

I have a jailbroken itouch, and to many peoples disbelief, it is not illegal! An actual 'jailbreak' changes the software your ipod works under, and as you own the product, you can do what you like in this sense. However, if you have warrenty, it will void this. Obviously there are ways of getting round this, but I dont think ill post these for legal reasons ;)

It is what you can do once your ipod is jailbroken that is the 'illegal' stuff. Sources such as 'hackulas' and others give users the ability to downlaod any app for free from 3rd party sites. Also nintendo snes and other old school consoles are available as simulators, with every game ever made available to play.

Apart from games, other amazing stuff can be done with a jailbreak. Watch live TV (you can do this without a jailbreak also), stream movies, tv series, downlaod youtube videos, songs and alot more! You can even change the whole way your ipod looks; set backgrounds, change the way icons appear, use a sroll down feature etc etc. You really have to have used one to understand the possibilities!

( I dont do any of the stuff deemed 'illegal' or copywright, just to make clear :) )

Post if you also have a jailbreak, want to discuss features, favourite apps etc.

Also post if you are thinking about doing this, or have even never heard of it, but just fancy gaining abit of extra knowledge.

*I am aware I have spelt 'jailbreaking' wrong, sorry for any confusion*

On a related topic I give you .... flash on a jailbroken iPad.

This is my main gripe about iStuff, it's so restrictive with software that Apple essentially throttles the usefullness out of their products. They want you to use their products their way and that's not really how things should be. The iPad would be a great little piece of kit if they loosened the reigns a little bit.

Yeah i totally agree, and thats why latly I am seeing alot of these jailbreak iphone and itouches. They really are impressive pieces of kit with a different software, some of which apple should look into providing themselves if they dont want to continue loosing money to these 3rd party software writers (loose money in the sense of app downloading etc.)

I am yet to use an ipad, but have heard great reviews. They seem to just be a bigger, more powerful version of a touch, but i am assured by friends they are much more than that! The same goes for iphone 4's.

Fixed title spelling and moved :)

With iOS4's new features and the fact that most Jailbreak apps are still not compatible with it I'm finding that there's diminishing reasons to actually Jailbreak unless you're an inquisitive hacker/coder or into the piracy angle.

The only reason I'm still Jailbroken is that my silent button is busted and the only way to switch to and from silent via software is using a Jailbreak app.

LockscreenInfo and iBlueNova were good, but my Lockscreen theme isn't iOS4 compatible and the dev has abandoned it, so never will be. And iBlueNova is dead on iOS4.

The only app that I would miss (if my silent button worked) would be ScummVM. But even that is becoming less of an issue with Revolution and LucasArts's revisiting of their point 'n' clickers :)

Oh, and Cyntact is pretty nifty. But I can see Apple adding something similar at some point in the future, and it's not a huge deal breaker.
