Help with console bush problem

Featured Replies

Hi.

I had my console bushes replaced last week by a gargae.

Stock ones replaced with the seat ones.

Since then i have had a grinding wineing noise getting louder with speed.

Car is booked in next week to be looked at.

I looked under the car today and have found that one of the bushes is set further in than the other in the holder as you can see in these pictures..

Is this just bad workmanship on the garages part?

Yeah that is likely, they should sort that problem out free of charge as it looks like their mistake :)

can i ask how much you were charged for the console bush replacement?

Wondering if its safe to drive now... wont be looked at till next friday.

The cost was £140 , i supplied the powerflex bushes and seat console bushes....

When you say grinding noise, do you mean like metal on metal, becuase from the pictures the bushes are in place, so id imagine it could just be dry bushes...

yea but one bush is flush with the metal the other has a 1cm gap between end of rubber in bush and the casing...

The noise gets louder the faster the car goes. Perhaps its more of a whine than a grind.

Taken the car out of gear and let it coast and noise is still there.

On turning left or right the noise does not get louder or quieter so i dont reckon it will be wheel bearings.

Apart from bushes only other thing ive had done is wheel alignment and also a new steering rack fitted last month.

Yes it's safe to drive with the bushes like that - the wishbone is actually located by the FRONT mount so it cant move along the pivot axis.

Have a look at the disc brake back plate - it's only thin steel and lots of mechanics bend it when working on the car so it rubs the disc slightly

Had a look at disc back plate couldnt see anything unusual, swapped wheels from back to front of car yesterday , still same problem.

Will take front wheels off again just to double check though..

Car went back to the garage today.

Turns out the noise is a bearing on its way out.

Been told it comes as a complete hub.

Does anyone know a good place to buy one of these, jorily or stealers?

and does anyone know the part number, the garage said they can get one for £100.....

You can buy them for around £56 at eurocarparts ( hub/bearing/abs ring assembly )

Unfortunately they are a complete bitch to fit unless you have access to a 20ton press or similar.

The only thing retaining the bearing in to the upright is friction !!!! - so it needs pressing out - and the new one pressing in.

All fixed now, new hub and had the one of the new bushes replaced.

I can at last use the car again :)

Thanks all for your help!
