Mk1 VRS Buying Advice/Guide

Featured Replies

Hi there guys,

I originally became a member of this forum on the look out for a Octavia VRS but now i have recently achieved promotion at work, but it has increased my commute 7 fold. This unfortunately has meant i now need a Diesel to keep commuting costs down.

I have searched a fair amount already before posting looking in Fabia VRS related threads so have a reasonable idea what to look for, but i wondered if there were any golden rules to adhere to when looking at a Fabia VRS.

The only thing that has worried me so far, is the Turbo's and Cam's seem to be common failure points? Is this just down to ill-maintenance, or incorrect maintenance? Or are they something which is more likely going to be an inevitable failure and as such, presenting me with big bills?

I have been looking at cars on between 35k-50k at around the 6-7 thousand pound mark if that makes any difference?

Any advice is appreciated as 7k is alot to spend on a car when you haven't researched properly!

Alex

The 1.9 engine is used in many passats and other cars and they have been going on for many 100,000 miles. I think servicing and correct oil plays a key roll into these failures. ;)

Yeah i thought as much. I know there is a VW spec oil that must be used, and i should imagine alot of cars are serviced at cheap places. I shall try to get one with main dealer, or specialist history!

As long as it is serviced on time should be no problem with it. FSH is a must, and also ask owners what oil they used some people dont no about the PD oil that is ment to be used For PD engines
